Tools and Hardware Reviews of Flowbee Haircutting SystemCustomer Review: I used to do hair professionally and I love this thing Summary: 5 Stars
First off - I used to do hair professionally. I remember way back when the Flowbee first started doing infomercials I thought to myself "That would really work good." It was not until this year that I finally bought one against the strong objections from my wife.
You have to understand the importance of my decision on getting a Flowbee. You see, I can get my hair cut for free from one of the best hair stylists I have ever been do. We do a barter. I own a business that I let her use our services for free, and in return she would cut my hair for free. The problem with our arrangement was that I did not like having to make appointments and I did not want to drive anywhere just to get my hair cut. Cost was not an issue. Neither was appearance. I paid nothing and she made me look great! Buying the Flowbee would not save me any money in the long run (except perhaps gas and time) and might not allow my hair to look as good as I am used to it looking - so it was not really an investment for me. It was a matter of convenience. I bought it anyway because I KNEW it would work great. Now I will explain why I knew it would work.
When a person cuts your hair using comb, scissors and fingers - it leaves grooves in the hair. Try this exercise. Squeeze your forefinger and middle finger together as if you had someone's hair in between the two and now look at those fingers with the palm side facing you. You will notice there are areas of your fingers that touch (your knuckles) and would squeeze the hair tightly while there are other areas that have a space in between them. If a hairstylist had your hair in her fingers like that and was pulling your hair up so that she could move it away from your scalp to cut it, the areas of her finger that are tight would grasp the hair tightly and pull up on it and the scalp, while the areas of her finger that were just loosely keeping the hair in place would not pull up on the scalp. After the cutting of that hair when she lets go there are now slight grooves in the hair.
Great hair cuts in general are all about getting the hair with straight lines and a uniform consistency in the length when going from longer hair to shorter hair. That is what the Flowbee does. Because the Flowbee uses a vacuum to pull the hair up it does not get the grooves that fingers get. The attachments allow for perfectly even, uniform hair all over. It also has tapered attachments so that you can go from longer to shorter hair evenly.
You cannot go incredibly short on the hair using a Flowbee. It will not do military style cuts or buzz cuts. The shortest attachment will give you approximately 1/2" of hair. You must use the guards. I made the mistake of taking all the guards off and the vacuumed clipper end of the Flowbee made a sealed contact with my scalp which pulled my scalp up into the clippers. This did not cut me, but it left bald patches because the scalp is flexible. Lesson learned.
My wife admitted the other day that she was happy I purchased this. She said she did not want to, and that only nerds use Flowbees, but she said I was right and I responded with, "which means you were wrong?" and she said, "Yes. I was wrong."
Using the Flowbee and it's various attachments, I am actually able to do advanced styles on my own hair. I have it as short as it will go on the sides and back and on top it gradually gets longer up into a tapered points and then it is spiked up like a mini-mohawk. It is what is in style out here now. No one can believe I did it with the Flowbee.
I cut my hair once a week now. Sometimes it is first thing in the morning when my eyes are still groggy and my breath stinks because I haven't brushed my teeth, and I love that I don't have to get presentable to go to someone to get my hair done. Sometimes it is right before I go out for the evening and I am dressed in the clothes I am going out in. The vacuum allows me to not get any hair on myself.
I love this thing. I say get it.
