Doing crown work solo has clear problems. Namely, just holding up a 12 ft piece of molding, on a ladder, with a nail gun, etc...you get the idea. Everyone that's ever down crown has either fashioned their own "helper" devices, or just brought a helper of the human variety.
These things do their job. I use a drywall screw to hold it in place about a 1/2" from the ceiling. Just enough space to push it up and out after the crown is in place.
It is not going to fit the crown flush to the ceiling and wall...that is not what it's for. It's merely to hold the far end up while you make your marks, or shoot a nail.
For that they work perfect.
