Tools and Hardware Reviews of Fastcap 3HANDCPACK 3rd Hand Contractor Poles, 4-Pack

Customer Review: What a disappointment
Summary: 1 Stars

I have the Zipwall system mentioned elswhere in these reviews. I wanted more poles, and the 3rd hand popped up under my Zipwall search. And for less money. After reading the claims and reviews and assuming that these would do the same job as my Zipwalls, I bought a contractor pack. I can say for sure that most of these reviewers have never had the pleasure of using the Zipwall system. When it comes to building a "Dust wall", FORGET the 3rd hand. There is no way to attach a plastic sheet to the pole!! So now I need a ladder not only to set up a barrier, but also to keep on fixing it!! What a waste of time and energy. The Zipwalls I have are so quick easy to set up, and they stay put. Plastic sheet attaches to the top of the pole... FROM THE GROUND...NO LADDERS. The 3rd hand poles are also very heavy and difficult to manage. And I can't risk one of these cheap things falling over and doing damage to my customers' furniture or cabinets. Bottom line; these are NOT effective for dust barriers, and in my opinion are far to awkward to use perhaps anywhere. What a disappointment. You sure do get what you pay for. I'll be buying more Zipwalls.

Customer Review: Does the job--just minor quibbles
Summary: 4 Stars

After filling our house with plaster dust for about the third time during renovations, I finally got smart and decided to get a plastic-sheet wall solution. I looked at both the ZipWall and these and found the FastCap poles to have a more substantial, sturdy feel.

At the time I bought mine, you could purchase plastic clips that helped hold sheeting on top of the poles--they work quite well, though the plastic still slips out a bit at times, requiring some care when you put up your plastic house. I don't see the clips listed on FastCap's site or here on Amazon anymore, though, so I'm not sure if they're still available.

My model (purchased about six months ago) also had a bag that was about two inches too short to hold the poles comfortably with their feet installed. It was easier (if annoying) to remove the feet and then put them in the bag seperate from the poles. FastCap's support people told me that they were considering a longer bag with a later revision. Not sure if that's happened or not.

All-in-all, a worthwhile purchase that has saved me hours of cleanup during several messy projects.

Customer Review: Works well
Summary: 3 Stars

I ordered these things to help me hang sheetrock and crown moulding. They work as advertised.

One thing I don't particularly care for is that the feet are screwed into a plastic cap. It really only seems to thread for a couple of threads so that is just waiting to break. The cap really should have been metal or they should have used an threaded insert. Seems cheap to save 50 cents..

I'm still waiting to get an answer from FastCap whether I can get a replacement. They simply do not answer their emails.
I like these things but the company that makes them does not seem overly responsive.

Edited 8/27/07: It may have taken longer than necessary but they did reply to the second email by sending a replacement foot. Was pleasantly surprised they also sent a replacement unit - I did not expect that.
The seeming unresponsiveness must have been a one time thing. They clearly care about their customers.

Can't seem to change my stars to 4 but that's my final vote. If that foot was designed better, it'd give it 5 stars.

Customer Review: The Right Tools for the Right Job
Summary: 5 Stars

Doing a brick and mortar demolition in the middle of the dining/living room areas wouldn't normally be a nice, neat, task. But thanks to the 3rd Hand (3Hand), I have a nice, neat dust barrier-a room within a room-that captures 90% of the dust. The 3Hand is easy to use. For my use I didn't want to nail a cleat to my ceiling to hold up the plastic to create my dust barrier room around the planter box I'm removing: The kit comes with large pads that allow the 3Hand to stand freely while I positioned the plastic over the top pads, and with one hand, I could use the 'jack' handle to extend the top pad to secure against the ceiling. I had my "room" built within 10 minutes. For my application, I learned that I really needed six 3Hands. Regardless, it's always important to have the right tools for the right job. Struggling on projects is not necessary when the right tools are available for the right price.

For the $3.99 shipping fee, Amazon had the tools on my doorstep in two days. You can't beat that for customer service.

Customer Review: I wish I could give this 10 stars
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these in preparation for remodeling my kitchen. I wish I could give these 10 stars! I'm doing everything on my own, so far I have used these (the contractor pack is the way to go!) for erecting a dust wall for cabinet spraying, supporting cabinets that I was removing, and installing new cabinets. As I write, I'm installing 3 layers of moulding at the ceiling--all by my little self! The 3rd hands perfectly support long runs of molding for fitting, then the microadjustment allows you to perfectly level the boards prior to nailing. One thing to note, the washers do not come with the pack for erecting dust barriers using the magnet heads, so buy some 1.5" heavy guage steel washers. Also I bought 4 sets of the FastCap door magnets (12 total)...they make it super easy to expand or secure a dust barrier in multiple ways. One more thing...don't be afraid to really tighten them up against a ceiling...I've had them come crashing down more than once because I did not tighten them enough.
