Tools and Hardware Reviews of Feit Electric ESL40TN/D 42-Watt Compact Fluorescent High-Wattage Bulb, Daylight

Customer Review: Wow, these are bright!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought these to put in the lanterns mounted on the outside of my garage to light my driveway. These were fitted with 60w incandescents which did not do a good job, and used too much energy. I wanted something I can leave on a timer, and will keep the area brightly lit for security.

These definitely fit the bill. Two of these light the driveway (and the street in front) as bright as if the sun were just rising; and the color is similar. I considered buying the 85W bulbs like 85 Watt Fluorescent Full Spectrum Bulb or 85 Watt - CFL - 350 W Equal - 6500K Full Spectrum - CRI 80 - 49 Lumens per Watt - 15 Month Warranty - Sunlite 5580... but these are more than bright enough for me.

The only drawback is that these bulbs are quite large. I needed to replace the lanterns on the garage with much larger ones that could contain these bulbs.

Customer Review: Not A Replacement for a 200 Watt Incandescent
Summary: 1 Stars

This bulb was very disappointing. It is most definitely not a suitable replacement for a 200 Watt incandescent. I have an area in the basement that has a single fixture and a 200 watt incandescent provides more than adequate light for that area. I put this bulb in and it would be suitable for accent lighting but hardly adequate for normal tasks. It was like twilight in the early evening. I have no objection to a bluish light but this provided far less light than a 100 watt incandescent let alone the 200 watt. My hopes of using less energy were thwarted. My mistake was not checking the lumens on the 200 watt incandescent which is rated at 3190 lumens compared to the light output of 2800 on this bulb. If you are hoping to do a direct replacement of a 200 watt incandescent with the same lumens this is not the bulb to buy.

Customer Review: It's like daylight up in my crib!
Summary: 5 Stars

This light is intensely bright. I got onto the Fluoroscent bulbs when I switched over and I saw how much it reduced my electric bill. I also liked the fact that I could spoil myself with the high powered light bulb without the high powered bulb prices. I put a few 100 watt bulbs in the house but I didn't even know they went to 200 until I saw this one. To be honest it's almost to much. It really and truly makes it feel like it's the middle of the day when I turn this thing on at night. I am excited to read with it. It's a very pure slightly blueish light. The bulb is much larger than a normal bulb so be aware.

The only light I could compare it to is the elven light in Lord of the Rings. You know the one Frodo holds up to fend off the spider? It's exactly like that. Seriously. It's elven bright.

Customer Review: Bright, very bright!
Summary: 5 Stars

Bright, crisp, cool blue light. 200W equivalent, 2800 lumens, 6500K color temp. This bulb doesn't get very hot but hot enough you wouldn't want to touch it. It doesn't hum. What this bulb is though, is huge! I didn't measure it but I'm sure its at least 1.5 times bigger than its smaller cousin the 100W equivalent. This bulb was bought to be used as a grow light and works much better than whats available at the supermarket. I have to say I'm intrigued by the color temperature of this bulb. Being the cool blue white color it is I was sure it would work well for a grow light. This light is somewhat color enhancing of plants, carpet, walls, etc. I like the light enough that the second day I ordered another and soon as payday comes, I'll be ordering two more. One for a lamp and the other three as grow bulbs.

Customer Review: Stay away!!
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased two of these bulbs from a local Hardware store to use for a photo booth setup. They were screwed into large open aluminum reflector clip-on lamps. One seems to work fine. One stopped working after about 3 hours when I wasn't in the room. I removed it, checked the contacts in the lamp, left it for a day, and when I returned, it worked just fine. For about 10 minutes. This time, there was an audible sizzle and a definite odor when it failed.

I exchanged it for a second one, which went "pop" and died after about 15 minutes.

There are some simple guidelines but no real warnings on the package about where NOT to use it, so I think it should have worked fine in an open fixture.

It is really too bad, because the light output is bright and clean.
