Tools and Hardware Reviews of Feit Electric NL5/LED Rotating Night Light with SensorCustomer Review: Better for basements, etc., but not perfect Summary: 4 Stars
One room of my basement has no ceiling light fixture, and trying to get to the floor lamp I plugged in can be a little perilous. Also, I keep the cats' litterbox in the basement, and didn't want them to have to deal with pitch dark (I know, I know), but also didn't want to leave a light on all the time. So LED nightlights it was!
I started with the kind that just looks like a flat glowing square, which my dad uses to light the path he takes when he gets up in the morning and doesn't want to turn on the lights. Those work fine for that purpose, because his eyes are already adjusted to the dark, and he's really just trying to avoid walking into walls. They weren't enough to illuminate anything for me, though, as I was coming from a well-lit first floor down into the basement, and my eyes weren't yet adjusted. So I gave him the two flat lights I'd purchased, and bought this one, which looked a bit brighter.
It is brighter! It's not as bright as a similarly sized conventional night light, and it does have an eerier blue cast to the light, but it's bright enough that I can get to the floor lamp safely, and I don't have any guilt about the cats going down to the basement.
My only complaint is with the sensor. Most of the time it works fine, but sometimes it gets confused and turns off when an object passes in front of it. This is a problem if the object is me, walking toward the floor lamp, and I'm suddenly plunged into darkness.
Nonetheless, I think this is a great option if you need a night light that'll be on much or most of the time, especially if it'll be used even when it isn't actually night.
Customer Review: Bright Night Light Summary: 4 Stars
I would have liked a white plastic cover/lens instead of clear. This light has 3 LED 0.6W bulbs & would be too bright as a bedroom night-light (for me) but I use it in the living room so I don't have to turn a room light on if I get up at night. I removed the clear plastic cover (held on by 3 small screws), sanded & painted the inside of the cover, then screwed it back on to tone down the "glare" of each little bulb. The inside of the clear plastic cover is ribbed but the little bulbs are still bright if you look toward the night-light, so I painted the inside of the cover. If you plug it into an outlet that is behind something else, so you don't see the night-light directly, it wouldn't need painting.
It measures 4 1/2 inches tall and 1 3/8 inches wide (if you don't rotate it sideways). It sticks out 1 5/8 inches from the wall when plugged in.
I like the light sensor. When it gets dark, the night-light automatically comes on. When there's light, it automatically turns off.
I like that its energy efficient.
The light rotates at the plug, which I have no use for. You can plug the light in, then turn it sideways to the left or right so it is horizontal to the floor. Someone may need this feature but it seems like a waste of production cost which only adds to the price. Both prongs of the plug are the same size so you can plug it into the top or bottom receptacle of your electric outlet irreguardless of its rotating feature.
Customer Review: My Parakeet Thanks You Summary: 5 Stars
My parakeet was getting mighty ticked off about my middle-of-the-night meanderings to the microwave, not far from where he sleeps. I can't stop my clanking sounds; but now I no longer need to turn on the light. This is just right, in it's close proximity to said microwave.
Let's hope this holds up. otherwise a white little bird will be contacting Feit Electric.
I'm back, one week later. If I could change it, two stars, three at best. The brightness was so drastically reduced that I'm now looking for another solution to my middle-of-the-night jaunts to the microwave. Meanwhile, I suppose half (or less) is better than nothing. Check me next week; I'm disappointed enough now.
Oh-oh. That bird is on the phone to Feit right now.
Customer Review: Works Fine Summary: 5 Stars
To my eyes, this light is 50-75% brighter than the NL4/LED from Feit, and the light (with the translucent portion of the shade rotated towards your room) is much whiter (bluer, or colder color temp.) and sparklier than the NL4/LED. After trying both, I will use this stronger light for my larger areas (like long halls, kitchen, unoccupied living room) where sleeping and TV viewing are not conducted, and the NL4/LED for the latter.
As of 5/8/08, the illustration given by Amazon for this light, as other customers have noted, is the wrong one. This light has a tubular barrel, mounted parallel to the floor; it is NOT shaped like a turtle clinging to the wall and parallel to it :-) .
Customer Review: Super bright the first few days Summary: 4 Stars
After a week or so the light became approximately 30% dimmer and stabilized. Still the three LEDs provided enough light for the area, and the sensor works perfect.
My wishes: I went to our local Walmart. They had quite a few LED night lights available, and cheaper as well. Sure they are not as stylish as the ones made by Feit. But with the money we spend on the light, I wish to be able to have more choices on the color of the light. Currently most LED bulbs, including the Feit ones, only emit this rather harsh bluish light. Personally I prefer a warmer color, a bit closer to a traditional night light.
