Tools and Hardware Reviews of First Alert 2017F Fire and Water Chest, 0.19 Cubic Foot, Gray

Customer Review: quality on par with its low price
Summary: 3 Stars

This safe is very heavy and made of a super thick plastic material that if in a short fire probably will protect what's in inside, but likely would fuse the whole box together making it a big pain to open. Also, my box arrived with a musty mold scent with signs of mold growing, and the manuals inside were damp and cold, suggesting that it does not keep out humidity, so I would suggest loading it up with dessicant packets if you live in a humid climate. Given the low price I do plan on buying one more, and I hope I never to truly have to test it out. However, the way I see it is if you want true protection you store your valuables off site such as in a bank safety deposit box. Even much more expensive safes in this genre probably would succomb to any intense disaster so one can only hope for the best.

Customer Review: Mold Box - First Alert Safe - Brinks Home Security Safe
Summary: 1 Stars

NO STARS! READ
I bought a similar First Alert lock box from Brinks Home Security (large enough for hanging file folders - CLASS 350) for my sister so she could PROTECT IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS. Simply, this product RUINS DOCUMENTS, NOT PROTECT THEM. You would think that a company like Brinks would sell a product that would go up and beyond the rated specs of protecting the valuable items inside the lock box. Come on Brinks, how can you sale CRAP like this - I know for MONEY!! This problem didn't show up in field tests? Sure it did and yet Brinks continued to sell this junk. This is NOT a lock box it is a MOLD BOX and it does a great job in ruining documents ! For the people that gave this product one star or better rating, GO GET YOUR DOCUMENTS OUT OF THE BOX BEFORE THEY ARE RUINED!

Customer Review: If I could give this product MINUS STARS , I would!
Summary: 1 Stars

I purchased this product in 2008. Like many others people, I found the documentation inside the box damp and there was a musty odor. I called Honeywell and they advised me that this was normal and suggested I put some silica gel packets inside. I did that and pretty much forgot about it since these are documents and items intended for long-term storage.

I just opened the box this week and found my documents and other items covered with mold!!!! THIS IS A HORRIBLE PRODUCT!

I reported it to Amazon Customer Service and suggested they look at all the other reviews from people with similar problems.

I understand it is long past their normal warranty, but Amazon should get our money back from Honeywell and stop carrying this recipe-for-trouble product.

Customer Review: Feels Solid and well worth the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this to be placed inside my gun safe to give my paper products extra fire resistance. It feels solid and easily accommodates full size documents and cash. For the money it seems like a great deal especially with free shipping considering it weighs close to 20 lbs. Granted it's not my gun safe but didn't cost thousands either. I can't comment on the locks as that is a non issue for me as I only wanted more security in case of a fire. If you want security you are going to have to pay to play as the saying goes. How hard would it be to break in with a crowbar or pry it off the floor and carry it out the door. If you want security you have to go big. IF you want some good fire protection put it in your freezer and it should make it through a fire.

Customer Review: Just what we needed
Summary: 4 Stars

Bought chest for interim "safe deposit box". Fits papers just right (note internal size...if storing folders will have to allow room for them to bend some). Chest was a little damp inside when we received it, which was stated in other reviews. So, we left it open with fan blowing on it for a few hours to let it completely dry out before putting things in chest. We also opted to leave the dessicant packet inside, just in case, and after a month we have had no issues with dampness inside the chest. Since this is a known issue, I do check on it from time to time, just to make sure there is no dampness inside. We hope this will never need to be tested regarding its fire and water resistance. So far, we are content with the purchase.
