Customer Review: Very Poorly Made Avoid this product

At first glance this seemed like a great product. Digital security and a backup Key.
However after owing and using this product for the last year It is clear this is a very flawed design and poorly made.
#1 Any safe that is electronic, ie battery powered is FLAWED. When the batteries(inside the unit) run down, you can NO LONGER OPEN THE UNIT.
Think about it, you have stored all your valuables in there and your batteries ran out, just like in your remote control, but here you can not get into the box.
#2 They give you a Backup KEY and now its clear why they do that. However, the key slot is about as cheap as anything in China can be made and having used it perhaps three times, the key JAMMED and would not turn.
So dead batteries and a $.10 Key mechanism create a useless device, period.
Never buy a security device that is battery based, take it from me, I should know.

At the usual great price point of Amazon.com, this brand name lock box is everything it is purported to be!
In order to limit access, I utilized the Honeywell Digital Locking Steel Box, in a commercial establishment, to house a volume control, an audio input selector, an audio input jack, as well as an MP-3 player.
I drilled the back of the unit, mounted it on a wall, and ducted wiring from a remote audio system rack, into the interior.
It is versatile! .....Use your imagination!
When I received the shipment, I told my wife, the "Cookie Monster", that it was a goodie box for our home! She wasn't too amused.
It is easy to program the unlocking code.
This Honeywell Lock Box is a Great Product.

This lockbox is just what I was looking for. I use it to keep my strong narcotic medication out of the reach of others and don't have to worry about anyone being able to break into it easily since the medication is dangerous. The digital keylock pad is so much easier than having to worry about hiding a key and retrieving it everytime I need to get into the box,but I like the fact that I have a key as well. Since the box is fireproof I keep paperwork that I would need in case of an emergancy where I would either have to gather them quickly or the steel would protect them from fire,water or weather damage. The papers are nice and safe under the sturdy foam pad that came from the box.
The only complaint that I can think of would be the weight of the box,but there is no way around that considering the steel is what is providing the security!

A few notes:
The batteries that come with it don't last at all. Right now I am just using the key backup primarily. I am not going to put 4 more AAs into it just for the keypad.
Secondly, THIS SAFE IS VERY INSECURE. I am in no way a professional lockpicker, but I was able to pick the backup key slot once when I lost my key. It took me about 2 minutes and I was in. The keypad did nothing, and neither did that wimpy piece of plastic over the keyslot. This uses a typical wafer-lock, the type found on filing cabinets. Anyone with two paperclips (like the ones I used) and a half-hour of internet study can open this safe. I REPEAT: THIS SAFE IS INSECURE.
It's also pretty flimsy and I wouldn't trust it against anyone with a crowbar and 30 seconds, either.

I purchased this security box for one reason only... to keep small hands away from my pistol, which is beside the bed for home protection. I can see that a theif could easily gain entrance to the box, but a 5 year old has NO CHANCE of getting into it. Valuables are kept in a large secure safe elsewhere in the home. The box also will satisfy our local laws about carrying pistols in a vehicle(a bonus not thought about when I ordered the security box). For my needs this box works perfectly, and was easy to set my combination. Note: when setting your code press and release the red button, if you hold the red button in it will not accept your code. Well worth the money and I recommend this security box.
