Tools and Hardware Reviews of First Alert PIR720RN Motion Sensing Light SocketCustomer Review: Love the concept, but poor length of life Summary: 3 Stars
I have been using these for about 6 years now and have gone through about 4 of them for the same room. The last one I bought only lasted 14 months. It seems that when ever the bulb burns out while it is on, it shorts out the unit. I have observed this several times when opening a door to the room that this is installed in. The light comes on and burns out like it would when you turn on a lamp and a bulb zaps out. When that happens the unit ceases to shut off after installing a new bulb. A new light will work in it, but the sensor seems to get burned out so that it will not shut off after the few minutes that it is supposed to do. I wish someone else or First Alert would make a better model. The Warranty only covers the first year, then the following two years it will charge you what it cost them to fix it. Crazy for only a $22 item. I just end up buying another one because I do not have an alternative solution yet. One theory is to replace the bulb every 6 months and hope it does not burn out and short the system.
Customer Review: Works but not 360 degree senstitivity Summary: 3 Stars
I recently purchased this for use in my garage. Its simple to use, just screw it into the socket and then install a light bulb (incandescent only) and you're up and running. The sensor however is not truly 360 degrees as indicated in the description. There are basically two sensor paths on either side of the fixture but there are definitely some dead spots where it can not detect movement. With a little adjusting, you can get adequate coverage and there are two arrows to indicate the sensor path though oddly they are located on top of the unit so you can not see them if installed in a ceiling fixture, but they are raised and you can feel them so you can make adjustments. The light flickers slightly when it first switches on but stops once the bulb heats up. Also, there can be a delay in the unit turning on with high temperatures, which could be an issue in the summer in 90+ degree heat. Despite its flaws, it does serve its purpose and makes it easier than groping for a light switch in the dark.
Customer Review: This has to be the best for in-home use. Summary: 5 Stars
I've used this product for several years now. I have one in my garage and in a small area under the house stairs. Under the stairs is where my well water pressure tank is located and some space that we use for storage. The people who built this house put a light socket in an almost inaccessible area and it was a real pain to turn the light on and off due to the low ceiling. But with this product, all you have to do is open the door and it senses your motion and the light comes on. Great. I also have it in the garage so when we use the side entrance we don't have to flub for the light switch. What is really great here is that it senses 180 degrees so it comes on from both entrances, which are at different ends of the garage. They do last a long time, though one of the two stopped working after we had the lights go off and on several times during a storm. So I ran out and got another one. Great product, easy to use.

Customer Review: Very handy sensor -- recommended Summary: 4 Stars
Radio Shack sold this sensor-socket many (20+) years ago, then stopped selling it. I used one for about 10 years and lost track of it after a move. Was glad to find this on Amazon.
Works great.
It's very sensitive. For some uses, it may be TOO sensitive and come one when you don't want it. So a room or closet that's normally closed would be good. Or hallway that doesn't have a lot of traffic.
Shuts off after about 4 min. of no activity.
100W incandescent max., but I would use 75W or 60W so it doesn't heat up the sensor so much.
Note: can only be used in a ceiling socket, with no globe or cover.
If you look into the sensor you'll see this round metallic thing, there's one on each side. Those are the most sensitive parts of the sensor. So screw in the sensor and then rotate back so one of these metal parts is pointing at your highest traffic area.
Customer Review: Excellent Purchase!! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased three of these and have been using them for a year now on a daily basis, multiple times a day.
They are excellent for entrances, hallways, etc. as the new Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) should be left on for at least 15 minutes once turned on before being turned off or else the bulb life is shortened (that's why incandescent are still very useful for quick on/off operations).
I mainly use CFLs in the house but use incandescent bulbs with these. THEY ONLY WORK WITH CONVENTIONAL INCANDESCENT BULBS(but it's not a major problem since they automatically shut off after 4 minutes)
The model in particular is very nice because it silent on/off (other generic models make a minor "click" notice every time they turn on and off).
Also, compared to other generic models, the SENSORS ON THESE ARE VERY PRECISE.
It is well-worth the money. Highly recommended!!
