Tools and Hardware Reviews of First Alert PIR720RN Motion Sensing Light Socket

Customer Review: Motion sensor works good
Summary: 4 Stars

Great for cellars, garages, closets, laundry room lights, etc. Especially for families who can't seem to remember to turn lights off in these areas.

I would not recommend using with greater than 75 watt bulb. Somewhat unfortunate that it doesn't work with cost saver fluorescent bulbs, but it only stays on for about 4 minutes once you leave, so it not an issue. The units do what they are supposed to do. Need to adjust the positioning for optimum performance.

My experiences are that they will typically last from 3 to 8 years. Keep your receipts, the company will honor the warrantee. Nothing lasts forever. I've had DVD & CD players expire in less time. I've had eight of these total, 2 died between 3 and 5 years, one died prematurely(was replaced free by manufacturer).

I like these units. In my home I presently have five in operation.

First Alert Motion Sensing Light Socket

I have pull chain lights in my walk in closets and when the chain broke and couldn't be fixed I looked for a new solution to the chain. My handyman suggested the sensor light socket. I could not find one at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart or Target but the employee at Home Depot told me First Alert made one...so I went online, found it and bought 2 of them.

Fortunately for me, the closet I needed it in has the right elements for it to work properly. I've tried it in 2 other closets and it didn't work. It has to be low enough from the ceiling to sense when you walk in and if your light fixture is close to where you walk in, it doesn't read the movement. I had to jump up with my arm in the air to get it to sense movement in one of the closets.

It's a great concept and it works under the right conditions.

Customer Review: So far, so good
Summary: 5 Stars

I installed one of these in a closet with a pullchain switched socket which my mother could not reach, and it has worked great so far. Even at $25 it is a great deal considering installing a simple wall mounted manual switch would probably cost just as much in material, plus at least a couple of hours labor installing it, without the advantage of having it motion controlled.
The only concern I have is with all the reviews that say the electronics in the unit get fried when the lightbulb burns out. If this is the case then it seems like First Alert should advise you to put a brand new bulb in to begin with and maybe change the bulb twice a year or so, as this would be much cheaper than buying a new motion sensor. I intend to contact First Alert (1-800-323-9005) to see if this is a manufacturing problem, and whether the 3 year warranty will cover it.

Customer Review: Works Well In My Garage
Summary: 4 Stars

Got this First Alert PIR720RN Motion Sensing Light Socket for my garage and it works great.

The garage door opens and I walk to the car the light comes on. The garage door opens and as the car enters the garage the light comes on. If I'm walking around in the garage with the garage door closed the light still comes on. That's all I want it to do and it does it well.

Side note, the light is a bare keyless socket on a side wall midpoint between the back wall and the garage door -- not the ceiling -- so the motion sensing "cone" emanates from the middle of the left wall hitting the garage door about midpoint.

Works to my satisfaction but your mileage may vary depending on the configuration of your room/space.

Customer Review: Screw In Motion Detector
Summary: 4 Stars

There's really not too much to say about the Motion Sensing Light Socket. It's a motion detector. You screw it in to your light socket, screw a light bulb into it, and flick the light switch to on. When something passes close to the light, it turns on. Simple as that. It's relatively inexpensive and it's very easy to install. I have not used it with a compact fluorescent yet, so I don't know how well it works with those. A couple cons: it seems very fragile. When contractors bumped it with a ladder, the bulb in it broke. After replacing the bulb, the motion sensor never shut off. The light stayed on indefinitely. So I bought another one. That one lasted about a year when it just stopped working. Again, it wouldn't shut off. To recap... cheap, easy to install, fragile, short lifespan.
