Customer Review: Good solution for hazard detection in existing homes

We have just received 6 of these detectors: 4 smoke only and 2 CO/Smoke combos.
We live in an old house that we do not own. Installing a wired network of CO and smoke alarms is impractical. We'll be taking these things with us when we move.
My 15 year old son had them all programmed and talking to one another in about 15 minutes. It took us less than a hour to install them. Testing was almost flawless. My only complaint is the test sequence seems a little short considering the need to run all over the house to verify all 6 units have been triggered successfully in response to each test button being pressed.
I'm planning to add more units now I've seen how easy they are to use and that they seem to work. My fears about a fire in the basement going unnoticed have been allayed.
I have a few suggestions for the manufacturer:
1. I would like to add a natural gas (CH4/methane) detector to this system. Seems like a reasonable thing to do given that natural gas is piped into the house and presents an explosion hazard if it escapes and mixes with the right amount of air; 5-15% of CH4 by volume will burn or explode. FirstAlert does not have such a thing.
2. I would like to be able to monitor, control and test my detector "network" from my computer. This would need some kind of interface and a relatively simple piece of software. Again, these things do not exist.
3. Please make the indicators easier to see. The LEDs are difficult to see. One must be looking straight at them as they are recessed.
4. Given the availability of very bright white LEDs it would be simple and cheap to incorporate one into the alarm unit to add some illumination to the room when the alarm triggers.
I'm giving this product 4 stars because I feel it could and should be cheaper.
