Tools and Hardware Reviews of First Alert SC05CN Battery Operated Combination Carbon Monoxide/Smoke AlarmCustomer Review: Blessed Relief Summary: 4 Stars
Had an alarm located near the kitchen using the ionization technology. It was driving me crazy with false alarms. I couldn't even use the toaster without the thing going into full panic, necessitating me having to leave my food preparations and charge around to silence the alarm. The unit lasted only a year...no surprise under the circumstances. While researching for a replacement I came to realize that the photoelectric technology would more likely be better for said location. Plus, I found that it was wise to use both types in the home. Since getting this alarm, I have had no false alarms while cooking and now have the satisfaction of having both types, since the ionization ones are in other areas of the home. Now, if this one just works when there is a true kitchen alert needed, I'm all set.
Customer Review: Don't be without it! Summary: 5 Stars
Twice in this month, in the news, two families lost children to home fires and a child was found dead in my town due to Carbon Monoxide poisoning. How devastating! Although my home has working builder installed fire alarms, I wanted the extra security of the CO alarm. I bought 4 (one for the fireplace area; which is gas) and now I have many fire/CO alarms throughout my home (and of course one in each bedroom). I feel so much more comfortable now and they are VERY loud. Every home should have more than one of these (minimum one on each floor). I am so glad I bought these. Oh, and ConsumerReports.org has this listed as the best combo alarm! Remember to change your batteries with every time change :).
Customer Review: appear to work as advertised Summary: 4 Stars
I have ordered and installed these alarms without a problem.
Everything works as advertised. The alarms come with nice
alkaline batteries, and are very easy to install. The default
installation is very convenient for home use, as it allows
one to remove the entire alarm from the mounting bracket
with a simple twist. This is great when you want to change
the batteries or paint the ceiling. An externally accessible
battery drawer is also convenient. The alarm is plenty loud.
I can't comment on the effectiveness of the CO/smoke detectors,
as I've only had them installed for a few days, but everything
looks okay at this point.
Customer Review: Good value and simple Summary: 4 Stars
I needed to replace a couple very old smoke detectors and decided to upgrade to a smoke and carbon dioxide detector. One of the problems with old smoke detectors is they use 9volt batteries which also are difficult to replace as well as expensive. This new First Alert dual smoke and carbon dioxide detector uses 2 AA batteries and has a separate battery compartment which allows you to replace the battery without taking the detector off the ceiling. Cheaper batteries and much easier to replace them. The cost at Amazon was only $30 and nicely cheaper than anywhere. All-around good service from Amazon. Very satisfied customer here.
Customer Review: Saved our Life Summary: 5 Stars
Purchased this smoke alarm for our laundry room. My wife has a habit of doing laundry at bed time. We also have a gas dryer, so I thought this combo unit would be the best. Middle of last month we woke up at 2 am to this alarm going off. Our dehumidifier caught on fire and had smoked the entire basement. After the fire department had contained the fire, I went and looked at the damage. We have lived there for 3 months and in that time all the other smoke detectors had quit working. So this one actually did save our life. Thank you First Alert.
