Tools and Hardware Reviews of Floodstop Washing Machine Valve Shutoff KitCustomer Review: Easy Install Summary: 4 Stars
Install this upsteam of your washer then sprinkle some water on the detector plate: the little valve motor makes a whirring noise and shuts off the water. All right! In a power outage, if you installed 4 "C" batteries, it will still work. If you don't have a spare AC outlet, it can run on batteries alone for a year. There is a flashing LED to let you know it is working.
I am no plumber, but all you need is a wrench. One of the fittings must have been out of spec because even with teflon tape I really had to (grunt) apply a lot of torque to thread it high enough to stop any leaks; always chancy because you could deform the coupling.
Wire hookup is so simple you really don't need the manual. The little leak detector plates can be hooked up in series and I bought an extra one for outside the pan, just in case.
The terminal box is too flimsy, and needs to be hinged, hence the loss of a star.
Customer Review: Works great, and the connections are better. Summary: 5 Stars
This is my second flood-stop system. We had a hose break 10 years ago and ruin the carpet. I bought a $90 flood-stop soon after and installed it. The first system had straight hose connections, so I had to have a few inches of clearance behind the washer to accomidate the bend. The solenoid on the hot water failed, so I needed to replace the flood stop. The new one cost $130, but I needed one. New one has better looking solenoids; the hose connection is a 90-degree bend which is easier on the hoses; and there is a connector between the control unit and the solenoids, making replacement easier. The addition of a switch to shut down the water by pressing a button is also appreciated.
Overall, the new flood stop is well worth the money.
Customer Review: Buying my second one Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using the FloodStop on my washer for 4 years. Recently, the flow to the washer was so low that it took a long time to fill. Found out that the cold valve was no longer stopping flow and during trouble shooting it will not open. I am so happy with the peace of mind that this device brings I am buying a replacement today. Like all devices, the only touble is when you discover that you had no protection. The only other time I had no protection was when my wife dusted behind the washer and pulled the sensor out from under the washer and behind the dryer. Verify setup and operation often.
Customer Review: Seems to be a good product Summary: 4 Stars
The quality of the components seems good. Since the manufacturer does not assume any responsibility for loss at all, I think that the price is about $50 too high, and for that reason I rate the product 4-stars. If in time, the product prevents a relevant accident or permits one to happen, I will update my review. As others have noted, installation is not hard--especially if you've used (teflon) pipe-tape before. I found a video [...] which answered all of my questions about using pipe-tape. Applying the pipe-tape (6X) was the most time-consuming part of the installation.
Customer Review: Security everyone should have Summary: 5 Stars
Washing machine floods are not uncommon. Prior to purchasing this unit, I had a different model that saved us from disaster when our 5-year old washer flooded the laundry room from an internal leak. That unit used a solenoid, which started making a lot of banging noises after 5 years. This model is made much better and has the added benefit of battery backup. Installing this device can easily save you 100 times it's cost.
