The Fluke 87 V has rocket-fast switches and fuses that keep you from blowing out your DMM. Hook it up to a 500mV signal one second and a 640V source the next second, and it switches seamlessly from one measurement to another without any smoke or fire.
You can get a thermister for the unit to measure temperature. You can also look at Voltage, Resistance and Amperage. You can monitor for conductivity between your leads or monitor duty cycles.
If don't need an o-scope but still need vitally accurate and reliable electrical measurements, then you can't go wrong with the Fluke 87 V.

The Fluke 87-5 is reasonably considered the finest choice for at least the first and second of the four multimeters (four--to measure, e.g., input and output powers at the same time by simultaneous measurements on input and output voltages and currents) that anyone who is serious about electronics should have. The 87-5 is portable, accurate, responsive, reliable, durable, and feature rich. The earlier 5-star reviews are not overstated! After I bought this meter I started to worry I might have overdone it. I'm relatively new to electronics and have recently started working with arduino's and xbee radios.
This is an awesome meter, super high quality. I like the ability to measure temperature. It's made in Everett. I know the Fluke Chinese meters are also high quality but it's nice to support the folks building these locally.

Plenty has been written about the excellent quality of this multimeter, so I won't duplicate it. Suffice it to say I am quite happy with my purchase.
My one gripe is that the LCD washes out and is very hard to read from certain viewing angles, especially from the top (such as if when the meter is hanging on a wall or panel below eye level).

I bought this unit to take the place of a few much cheaper, no-name models floating around my house. I haven't had a single problem so far. Whatever I throw at this baby, it handles with ease. I'm sure as a hobbyist that I over-bought. But the lifetime warranty and stellar reviews decided for me.
