Tools and Hardware Reviews of Frigidaire FAX052P7A Window Unit Air ConditionerCustomer Review: Noisy, inefficient, & flawed. Summary: 2 Stars
I bought 2 of these 2 years ago.
These are the the noisiest air conditioners I ever heard. It's not just the white noise of air or fan noise, but it vibrates a lot. It vibrates the whole wall & window. One can loudly hear the vibration from the wall from the room below, above, & next door... in an all brick building. You can feel the walls vibrating from other rooms too. It's like the sound & vibration of those coin operated air pumps you see at self-serve gas stations & mini-marts. The noisy compressor inside vibrates almost the whole house.
My other 2 air conditioners were lost during a fire. They were rated exactly the same as this one. 5,000 BTU, & draw about 5 amps (600 watts). But my other ones, which where over 10 years old, made much less noise. Not only was it less fan noise, but they did not vibrate the windows, walls, & most of the house. They also cooled similar size rooms much more than this model.
These only cool around half as much as other 5,000 BTU models, so the rating cannot be correct. I'd be generous to say this model is about 3,000 BTU.
As many who have owned AC before know, once it or the compressor inside is off, you have to wait at few minutes before you can turn it back on. Otherwise the compressor inside will seize up & not start, drawing almost a dead short across the power line. This brings us to it's biggest flaw... the thermostat.
When the room is cool enough so you back down the thermostat, so the compressor inside turns off, within a minute or so it will try to cycle back on. The compressor hasn't been off long enough so will seize up, & draw 14.7 amps! The lights in the room will dim, & the fan will slow down.
The AC will continue to cycle into an almost dead short condition for several more minutes, until the compressor has set long enough to un-seize. By that time it has been overheated by trying to start prematurely, so has to run longer before the AC blows really cool air. This is inefficient, strains your wiring, the compressor, & may pop your circuit breaker.
Most modern AC with a thermostat have electronics to prevent the compressor from re-starting for a few minutes to give time for it to un-seize (due to refrigerant back-pressure). But not on this model. So the thermostat is a useless gimmick, that's inefficient, & can be potentially hazardous.
It actually uses less electricity & is safer to use by leaving it full on, rather than using the thermostat.
The hi/lo switch only controls the fan speed, not the compressor. The compressor draws most of the power, so switching to low won't save very much money. Low may reduce the air & white noise a little, but not the wildly vibrating compressor.
The 8-way louvers on this & their other models is almost useless. They only change the direction of the air flow a little bit. The air still mostly is directed forward. The louvers will only change the flow only slightly off center from forward. So unless you have it in a window in the center of the room, the air flow can't be directed to where it's probably needed.
