Tools and Hardware Reviews of GE AccessPoint 001413 KeySafe Original 2-Key Slimline Pushbutton Combination Key Box, White

Customer Review: Very strong and lots of room in it
Summary: 4 Stars

Keep this out of sight, as it tells everyone "hey, there's house keys in here."

Pro:
-Beefy... very heavy duty
-Easy to install in a few minutes
-Quick and easy to set the code (quick and easy to change too)
-Code can be more (or less) than 4 digits. I think that you can choose any combination of 1-10 digits in your code. Also, while you can technically reuse numbers, they're meaningless. That is, 7787 would open with just 87 or 78 (order is not important).
-White is a nice color
-Holds our Mul-T-Lock key which is larger than most, with room for more
-Keys can be attached to the unit face (which removes when unlocked) so if you drop the key it is less likely to get lost
-We think that this is the same item sometimes featured on the "It Takes a Thief" TV show

Con:
-No other colors (would have loved tan or black)
-I needed additional hardware (anchors) for my install
-Sequence is not important to the code... that is 1234 opens code 2314. This effectively reduces the number of codes available to thieves.
-Also using any number in your code more than once is meaningless. For example if you like the code 224424, 24 would open your lock (also 42 or any combination of 2 and 4 would as sequence is unimportant).
-Code can be a little hard to see when setting... be sure to have good light and your glasses

Bottom Line: Recommended. Use with other home security items (key cabinet, charlie bar, alarm system, etc.).

Customer Review: It Takes a Thief
Summary: 5 Stars

After watching the Discovery channel's TV show, "It Takes a Thief", I realized I had some security issues. This key lock helps address a door that leads outside my home. The door has window panes on it and a simple latch lock. All it would have taken was for someone to punch out a window and just turn the latch to get inside my home. I replaced the latch with a double deadbolt and mounted this keysafe near the door so I, and my family, don't have to keep up with the key.

This item was extremely hard to find at retail stores and it was out of stock for weeks on Amazon, so if you are considering getting one I do it right away. Also, at the time I bought this shipping was free and it only took 3 days to arrive

It was super easy to install, just 4 screws into any flat surface, and make up a code. You can use any amount of numbers in your code, but the same number can't be used twice. On the down side, it doesn't matter in what order a person pushes the numbers to enter a code.

Example: Your code is 2 4 6 8. I could enter 4 8 2 6 and still get access.

My keysafe is inside my home, so I don't have to worry about someone taking time to tinker with it and guess my code by hitting random numbers.

The description states this is for 2 keys, but it can hold much more. I am very happy with this product and I am going to order a second one, for my garage, now that I see how good it is.

Customer Review: Solid and easy to use
Summary: 5 Stars

I just bought my second of these after a little problem with my first one: I forgot the combination! I spent about two hours trying various combinations and failing to remember what I used. So I took a hacksaw, chisel and hammer to it, just to see how tough it is.

I started by trying to cut it open with the saw while it was on the house, but it was hard to use the saw that close to the house and switched to the chisel after cutting part-way through the face of the KeySafe. I then took the chisel and hammer to the cut I had started. A few minutes of pounding allowed me to get it off of the house, but it was still closed. I tried a few more minutes on my workbench, using just the hammer and chisel, and couldn't get it open.

This thing is not going to be opened by a casual effort. It would be easier (by far) to break a window and enter that way. Some of the comments have complained that the order of the buttons doesn't matter. That's true, but irrelevant. There are 1024 possible combinations on this. It would take hours to try guessing them all. Don't forget your combination.

Aside from its security, I like the small size of this KeySafe. I put mine on the door jamb between the storm door and the main door. I also like how easy this is to use. The push buttons are easy to use, even in low light or adverse weather.

Customer Review: Secure storage for one or two keys
Summary: 4 Stars

We've been using this key safe for a few months now and are quite pleased with the performance. We mounted it on the inside of our French doors to secure the inside key. We did not want anyone to break the window and get the key from the inside or, if they had already broken into our house, get a house key for a future return date.

Pros:
- very easy installation, just a few minutes
- securely mounts to our door
- sturdy construction of the box
- easy to (intentionally) unlock

Cons:
- flimsy buttons for the combination
- fiddly combination set mechanism
- must use combination to return key to storage position
- color is pretty utilitarian
- small internal storage for the size of the box

I don't find a problem, as an earlier reviewer did, of having the numbers without sequence, e.g. 1234 is same as 2431. That feature would add another layer of security, but correctly picking 4 out of 10 numbers is still a challenge. It would behoove you to make the number more challenging than 1234.

I gave it 4 stars because of the perception of a light weight keypad. I have some concerns about long term usage. Other than that, it is a sturdy little safe to store a few keys.

Customer Review: No more lockouts
Summary: 5 Stars

I occasionally forget to grab my keys. Always before this meant finding an unsecured window and shinnying through. No more with this key safe!

It is small enough to mount securely to the doorjamb of the door. The door jamb is made of quite strong metal or wood. You drill the holes and then screw in the four screws. Its a snap to install.

You set your own combination by turning little flippers on the inside of the lid. Then you punch in your combination. Each button can only be used once in the combination but if you don't tell your wife it will make it easier for her to use her favorite number even if she uses the same number twice in her combination.

Your family members will have access, you can change the combination if you want to let workmen come into the house during the day. I put the box in a highly visible doorway area to prevent someone from feeling comfortable beating on this with a crowbar. Of course anyone with a crowbar could just pry open one of the vinyl windows but we all need an illusion of security, don't we?
