Tools and Hardware Reviews of GE 13-Watt Energy SmartTM - 8 Pack - 60 watt replacement

Customer Review: Not as good as incandescent bulbs.
Summary: 1 Stars

Three years ago I bought a bunch of these bulbs and changed nearly every bulb in the house; I wanted to do my part, and also lower my electric bill. Now, as they are burning out, I just replace them with incandescent bulbs for the following reasons:

-They don't last 5 years. The package states they will last up to 5 years, but I haven't even had these for close to 5 years and half have burned out. If the manufacturer was honest, they would state the AVERAGE life of the bulbs. They actually last about as long as regular incandescent bulbs.

-Some of them make a humming sound. I don't know why some make a barely audible, annoying humming sound. At first I didn't know where the sound was coming from until I noticed the sound stopped when I turned the lights off.

-They cause major interference with my radios. When listening to AM, a loud buzz comes over my radios just about anywhere in the house. I can almost get rid of the buzz by moving the radios as far away as possible from these bulbs, but there is always some buzzing if a few of these lights are on, or even one light that is located nearby. I ended up just changing back to incandescents in the rooms that have radios (living room, kitchen and bedroom).

-They are not cost effective. Maybe my monthly bills have gone down a few cents with these bulbs, but not enough for me to tell, and certainly not enough to cover the initial cost and replacement costs of these bulbs as they burn out. It's just plain cheaper to stay with incandescent bulbs!

Well, thats about it, just my experience with these. And I don't care about the negative comments this review will attract, I'm telling it like it is.

Customer Review: GE 13-Watt Energy SmartTM - 8 Pack
Summary: 5 Stars

Items arrived in a very quick time, well packaged.
Replaced all 8 of my overhead lights in my workshop, all worked. Initially they started out dim (typical of fluorescent bulbs) but after 10 - 15 seconds they seemed very bright. A side by side comparison of a Standard GE 60 watt soft white incandescent bulb showed the CFL a little brighter and slightly whiter. The 60 watt incandescent is about a month old. In the workshop the other morning was a cold 28 degrees, the CFL's came on instantly and gained full brightness in a matter of seconds. I have tried other lesser known brands and found that they may not come on at all or take a while to fully brighten when the temp was below 35 degrees.
I have purchased GE CFLs before and they seem to last for years, I have a GE cfl on a dusk to dawn light control on the garage entrance and that has been working for over 3 years now. It is recommended not to touch the glass part of the bulb with your bare hands as it may shorten it's life. Also the frequent on-off switching of fluorescent lights will decrease there life span, so if you put them in a place like my refrigerator which seems to get opened and closed a 100 times a day, a CFL would not last very long.

Size is a 1/2 inch longer then a ordinary 60 watt incandescent bulb but is 3/4 inch smaller in width. To see if it fits your application, try a empty toilet paper cardboard roll in your light fixture, if you have a little room left on the ends then these should fit just fine.
Weight is about an ounce heavier then a regular bulb.

I'd recommend these, a good value and will buy again.

Customer Review: CFL Facts and figures
Summary: 4 Stars

Things to look on the package:
1. Kelvin temperature (K): The only accurate measurement for the kind of light or "color" of light you'll get. 2700K is pretty close to the "warm" incandescent we are all used to, 4100/4200K is known as "Cool White" (you might look "ghostly under that) and 5,000+ is the daylight/sunlight. If the lamps do not have the K designation, do not buy them - they are the cheaper variety since establishing the K temp. costs more.
2. Lamp Life (Hrs): The life of a light bulb is the MEAN life, that is at the stated hours HALF of them will be dead and HALF of them will still be working. Life can be affected by many factors, one being how many times a day you turn them on and how long they stay on. As a rule, the more on/off's, the less they last.
3. Initial lumens: If it is not listed try another brand. For the typical 60W equivalent it ranges between 700 and 900 lumens. Try for 800+ In general the highest the K temp. (see #1 above) the higher the lumens.
4. Make sure you read what they say about DIMMERS, as well as photocells, timers, etc. Avoid costly surprises.
5. Make sure they are rated for outdoor use - if that's where you want to install them. The environment's temperature has a lot to do with the CFL performance.
6. Buy as few as you can first and redo, say one room. See how YOU like it (allow 90 seconds warm-up time). If you are a male, have your female with you...she might have some objections you can't even think about!

HAPPY HUNTING!

Customer Review: Not bad for the price
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been using these bulbs since the second week of September.. so about 4 months now. None of them have blown out yet and that is even when used in lights that seem to be turned on and off frequently throughout the day.

The light they gave off for the first month was really bright white. I have noticed now that it isn't as bright as before..it is more of a yellowed brightness that is coming off of them. It is not really noticeable though..it's not like you look around and say "ohh it looks yellow in here.." ... it's just that I can tell the difference from when they were first put into use. I don't mind it though. It doesn't pose any problems and there is still plenty of light given off by them.

I paid under six dollars for this pack of bulbs and for that price I am very happy with the purchase and the bulbs. They were great for the purpose they are supposed to serve and I don't have any complaints. The change in color of the lighting they provide is just an observation and not a downfall or somplaint as far as I am concerned.

I'd recommend them if you want a cheap option to replace all your "regular" bulbs and still have decent lighting in your home. I'd say the light given off by these bulbs is comparable to the light a "regular" 40 watt bulb gives off. That's what I have found when comparing them.

Customer Review: a great deal at this price . . .

Prices at Amazon often fluctuate, but $6.99 for an eight pack of CFL's (compact fluorescent lamps), is a very good price, especially if you get free shipping. These 13W lamps are very small, only 1.5 inches in diameter, and 3.9 inches high (not including the screw in base). This smaller size lamp is ideal for use with light fixtures with a diffuser or lens, where the compartment for the lamps is small.

Lamp color is measured in degrees Kelvin, and these are rated at 2700 degrees K. Color perception varies from person to person, but these lamps are on the "warm" side, closer to incandescent light, and nicely suited for home use. The light output from a 13W CFL, is roughly equivalent to a 60W incandescent lamp, and unless used in tandem, are probably best suited for general use applications.

These particular lamps are manufactured in China. Rated life is 8000 hours (approximately 333 days), with an initial output of 825 lumens. Lamp life is based on performance under ideal conditions in a testing lab. Turning a lamp on and off, shortens its life, and actual lamp life is almost always shorter than the rated life. Even assuming you get as little as 80% of the rated life, 87 cents per lamp is still a pretty good deal.
