Customer Review: Excellent Range, Great for Water Leak Detection

This control center was purchased along with two GE wireless water leak sensors for a split bi-level home. They were to supplant a rudimentary water alarm, where the alarm and sensor are combined in one single unit, placed in a basement. The obvious weakness with such a setup is that the alarm may not be audible to an individual located on a different level of the house. The GE control center has been an excellent replacement for the previous all-in-one alarm as it is easily able to receive signals from water leak sensors in a basement two floors and 70 feet away from the control unit. My one concern, however, is that the alarm is TOO loud.
My original intent for purchasing the GE Choice-Alert wireless control center was to provide a superior audible water leak alarm for an elderly relative. The one issue with this product is that the alarm could dangerously startle an older person. For example, I would never want to put this in a bedroom of a senior citizen because they might woken up to a piercing alarm loud enough to cause cardiac arrest. I can understand that having something this loud for a burlar alarm makes sense but that is not my application. If GE's focus was to scare burglars away, they did a good job with the acoustics. However, for water leak sensing, it simply doesn't need to be 120+ decibels.
My tests with the water sensors were generally successful. I was able to set the alarm off by dipping the wireless sensors into the reservoir of a sump pump. Resetting the control unit after the alarms were engaged was NOT intuitive. In fact, I couldn't easily tell if the sensor was in fact armed with working sensors or just armed with perhaps a sensor that was still activated. It would be nice to have bidirectional communication with the sensors so it is clear that the control unit is both armed and sensors are functioning. Furthermore, sensor battery level indicators on the control unit would also add a margin of safety so the user would know in advance to change the batteries. At this price point, that could be asking a bit much.
For the cost, the GE Choice-Alert wireless control center is an excellent value. In fact, it is almost amazing the amount of functionality and flexibility that can be had in an alarm system for a sum equivalent to single martini in pricey bar. It is impressive that this product can connect to a variety of sensors. If it weren't for the extremely low cost, I would give it four stars. However, at this price point, it is a five star offering.

Wireless Control Center for Sensor Monitoring
The entire Choice Alert Security System is designed around the Wireless Control Center, the system's hub. The Control Center monitors each and every sensor that is wirelessly connected to it. As many as four sensors can be programmed in each of four zones, giving you the security of up to 16 sensors to guard your entire home, including sensors for doors, windows, gates, water leaks, and motion detection.
The Wireless Control Center allows you to secure your system with a custom four-digit code that can be changed at any time. Plus, the center lets you control many system features. For example, you can select 'Home' mode for an instant alarm and 'Away' mode for a delayed alarm. In addition to the armed alarm system, the Control Center also offers a visible and audible Zone Notification alert system (with a choice of continuous alert or single chime mode) and a dedicated alert zone (Zone 4).
