Tools and Hardware Reviews of GE 50723 LED Motion Sensing Night LightCustomer Review: Versatile, reliable, bright ... or dim, or red, or green, you choose Summary: 5 Stars
We have had several of these lights in our home. The problem is, guests keep loving them, and we keep giving them away ... And, the two nearest megamarts don't carry them any more.
These require common household 110-120 VAC, and will only work if your building's power is on. The light uses standard 4 watt "Christmas" lamps. It comes with a clear white lamp. The one in my bathroom has had a clear, red, lamp installed in it, by me. Not exactly rocket science. Preserves night vision.
N.B.: The four new ones I just received have LEDs permanently mounted in them - no more replacing them with red or whatever. Might try dying the clear cover. They do seem brighter than the old 4 watt holiday lamps, and draw <0.5W, so they are more energy efficient than the incandescent ones.
They go out after about 1.5 min. If you are seated and motionless, wave at it, it will come back on.
I use several more of the same, all white, primarily along a hall or near a stairway, where I want to have light in the night without carrying a flashlight or flipping wall switches. The dog does set them off, but who cares.
If you want a power-failure lamp, this is NOT what you want. There are a number of 110 VAC self-charging, battery operated power failure lights available.
I've been looking for a combination motion + power failure night light, and just found one: The "Sentina LED-92M Smart Rechargeable LED Light for Emergency or Everyday" NOTE: I do NOT have one, HAVE NOT tried it. More expensive than this GE 50723, of course. Has more features, and has gotten good reviews. Check it out, too!
Customer Review: Great little night light Summary: 4 Stars
The GE motion sensor night light is a pretty good night light. I bought 3 motion sensing night lights for my apartment and here's my review of all of them for comparison. The GE night light has a yellowish candescent bulb so it's bright, but mellow. The Maxxima is very bright in comparison because of the LED's white light. The GE bulb, however, is slightly brighter than the milky white Target brand "AmerTac" LED motion sensor night light though. The GE sensor can pick up from ~6-8 ft (a little shorter than the Maxxima and a little farther than the Target one) which is still pretty good, but the motion sensing angle isn't that good only about 120-145 degrees. I tried it in the hallway, and I have to stumble a couple feet before it picks up my movement. The night light is normal sized, so if you plug into the top socket, there's room for something else in the second socket. The light stays on for a good period of time, about ~60 sec. I prefer it over the Maxxima ~30 sec and the Target brand one that seems to stay on forever (it turns off after a couple minutes). If you were to get a bunch of them (instead of getting all different kinds like me), I think I would choose the GE one for the most uniformity and balance of features (it is a bit more expensive then the other options though).
Customer Review: Don't fix it if it ain't broke! Summary: 4 Stars
We've been a huge fan of these GE lights and been using these for over an year. Recently (November, 2009), we ordered 3 more lights only to find that GE replaced the light bulbs with LEDs. Problems with the new set:
1) The light isn't as bright in the darker areas in the house, which is a huge minus.
2) After a couple of days of use, we found that one of the lights stayed on whole night in the master bathroom, even when there was no motion to trigger it.
3) We almost freaked out last night when another piece from this newly ordered lot lit up on its own. It was inside the house on the second floor and there are no rodents that could have triggered it. Needless to say that we searched the whole house at 10 p.m. for any signs of break in.
We simply think that this new generation of lights has not gone through GE's rigorous quality control process and needs some improvements to restore it back to the hall of fame.
We still like these lights (that's why the 4 star rating), but it was a great disappointment to see that GE team didn't weigh all options during the redesign. These new generation lights are recommended for bathrooms and for your kids bedroom, but not for the very dark corridors of your home (area leading to garage, etc.).
Customer Review: Works as advertised...until it doesn't. Summary: 1 Stars
The first one of these I received simply didn't work. It wouldn't come on at all unless I smacked the sensor. I e-mailed Amazon and they sent out a replacement, free of charge. The replacement they sent out worked great. That is until about a week ago. It now just won't turn off. It will come on when I walk by it/into the room, but will just stay on until I unplug it for > 90 seconds. After that, rinse and repeat.
I bought the item the first week of January. It stopped working last week so it only last a little over a month. I will say that it worked GREAT when it did work. It would come on at the slightest of movements and only when there was no light.
A few logic problems I noticed were:
-it would come on and stay on after the lights were on. It would keep detecting your movement so as long as you were in the room with the lights on, it would continually stay on. It should a) have turned off when the lights came on or b) stopped detecting movement with the lights on.
Definitely wouldn't recommend this product to anyone as I'm not the only person with a problem. There are severe quality control issues with this product as it was DOA at first and the second just stopped working.
Customer Review: Excellent product for price! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased three of these lights (bedroom, hallway and bathroom) for my 96 yr old Mom with moderate dementia. Had to remove the one by her bedside - too bright! but the one in the hall works very well - hall length approx. 20 feet. The only thing I'd like better is if the light sensed motion from the side. Seems to work very well if approached from the front but there's a delay in lighting up until you get almost in front of it when moving down the hallway. The bathroom light has been WONDERFUL! Faces the hallway and turns on from about 10 feet, illuminating the area very nicely. I would absolutely buy these again. The price is right compared to many I looked at and an effective way of keeping Mom oriented when waking up in the middle of the night! No more trying to find her bathroom via her bedroom closet OR getting "lost" on her way back to bed after her 3am stroll to the kitchen. If I were to replace - I'd try to find ones that stay on a little longer - say 2-3 minutes. Great little product at a great price.
