This was purchased for a simple window alarm in the garage. It has a loud enough alarm to be heard in most areas of the house, even through a door and wall. The alarm is a two piece unit with a magnet and the body of the alarm. The magnet holds a switch open to keep the alarm silent. When it is moved away, it sets the alarm off. If the window or door is quickly moved back to the original position, then the alarm will go silent again.
A better alarm would stay sounding until reset, but that would require a more sophisticated circuit than this unit has. I don't mean to be negative about this alarm as it is very inexpensive and serves many good uses. It has a choice of chime or alarm and a handy test button to check on the batteries. OH, yes, the batteries: it uses 4 small LR44 or #357 1 1/2 volt button batteries that are not known for long life. Also they are usually sold in packs of 3, so it requires purchase of two packs of batteries. I have not had occasion to replace the batteries yet, but if it proves to be a bother, I plan to purchase a 4 battery (in series) holder for AAA or AA batteries and connect it internally to the alarm battery contacts. I have done this to small digital clocks and get years of service from AAA batteries where the button type would last less than a year. Just have to match the voltage of the device and make sure positive to positive and negative to negative when making the internal connections.
