Tools and Hardware Reviews of Elgin Travel Alarm ClockCustomer Review: I Give Up!! Summary: 1 Stars
Because of the generally positive reviews and the really low price I decided to take a chance and try one of these. My initial opinion matched those of the best reviews. It is a cheap, simple alarm clock and a great package for travel. The display is large and clear, the controls are intuitive and easy to use, the night light and snooze alarm are easy to access, and the alarm is nice and loud. I was really starting to love it........and then the display pixels started to drop out. The display soon became unreadable.
The clock was just too cheap to bother sending back so I ordered another one. It worked great the first night. When it rang in the morning I hit the snooze alarm and, since then, if the alarm is enabled at all it rings every several minutes. I kept trying it periodically for a couple of days. I even took the batteries out for a while and then replaced them. No change. It is locked into perpetual snooze mode.
I finally gave up and, for an additional $2.50, ordered a Casio. It works just fine.
Customer Review: A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY Summary: 1 Stars
I don't understand all the raving reviews about this useless alarm clock.
Mine, when set up, buzzes for less than a minute, in such a low tone that you can happily sleep through
the entire time and wake up two hours later without even noticing.
Additionally, it would be supposed, when you do not hear the alarm the first time, to buzz again at 4 minute intervals: IT DOESN'T.
In simpler words: it only sounds for less than a minute at the set time, it has a very low tone, and stops dead there, until the day after.
No appeal, no redemption. You are going to be late for work if you rely on this awful clock.
It is a waste of time, money and hope.
I purchased it because it bears the name of "Elgin", a very good watchmaker. But I went back to my "Made in China" $6 alarm clock, that is reliable, humble and
does not require fussing about.
Customer Review: Nice basic alarm clock Summary: 5 Stars
I live in a studio and don't have a table for my bed, so I was looking for a small simple alarm clock that runs on batteries. So far this one has been great. It has a small profile and simple controls, a large light/snooze button that's easy to hit when you're still half asleep, and a three tone alarm beep that's not too loud but still wakes you up. I've only had it for a week but it's still perfectly on time.
There are only two things I would change one it. First is that there's only one alarm you could set. It would be great if there was a second alarm so I could set one time for weekends and another for weekdays, but changing the time is easy so its not a dealbreaker. The other is the 4 minute snooze button. Again, not a big deal but coming from alarms with 7 minute snoozes its going to take a while to get used to.
Customer Review: Timex travel alarm clock... Summary: 4 Stars
...sold at Walmart for about nine bucks is identical to this watch except for a more squarish shaped case and snooze button. Funny that they rebadged it as "Elgin" and sell it here, maybe the "Timex" version is a Walmart exclusive?
Anyways, I quite like it...folds up easily, and best of all the alarm starts out gentle then gets more insistent. I was used to a much shriller and louder alarm, on my Casio analog travel clock which I've gotten rid of because of its loud ticking. Am glad that it uses an easily replaceable AAA battery.
My only reservation about this clock is the slider switch for setting the time, alarm time and alarm on/off seems too flimsy...hope it holds up! Also when you press the Snooze/Light button there is a slight humming noise while the light is on...no biggy, just kind of tacky.
Customer Review: Does the job Summary: 4 Stars
I picked up this item for $5.99 with free shipping (Amazon Prime). At this price, I don't really care how great it is; I just want a bedside alarm clock that illuminates. Well, this does the job. The display is large and easy to read, unless you are at too low an angle. This kind of LCD display is only readable at certain angles, but what do you expect for $5.99? The big, blue snooze/light button is easy to find in the dark and does what it's supposed to do. If anything, it's a bit on the bright side when you are half-asleep and your eyes are night-adjusted. It was a breeze to set up; no stupid hoops to jump through, and the buttons are obvious for all but the most tech-challenged. For the price, it's a useful instrument. If you want something fancier and better engineered, go with a $10+ Casio or similar.
