Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 05500 MP400 Compact Sport Multi-function ToolCustomer Review: Go with this one Summary: 5 Stars
What a great design. With proper adjustment (and/or some slop from wear), you can deploy the needle-nose pliers with the flip of the wrist, making this truly a one-handed operation. I have handled some multi-tools that have the Leatherman type design, by which the device has to "butterfly" open to access the pliers. This works ok for squeezing the pliers, but releasing them may be a problem because the handles of the tool may re-fold in on themselves rather than opening the jaws of the pliers. Anyway, that little problem is impossible with this Gerber design. The scissors are great, the knife edge is incredible, the screwdriver assortment is adequate, and, finally, the Gerber design results in comfortable grips for your hands when using the pliers (again, not like the Leatherman type design). And, you can't beat the price. Buy with confidence.
Customer Review: I buy this tool for my students at graduation Summary: 4 Stars
The review of its cheap I would have to say is wrong. Well it is for 20 bucks. I have the big brother to this tool. I have been using it for about 3 years now and have never had a problem with it. I buy this model for my student workers when they graduate. I does need to be broken in. With a little bit of use you can flick out the pliers with one hand. Also one reviewer said that you can't use the other tools without pulling the pliers out. This is true and not true. Pull the pliers out, select your tool, slide the pliers back in. Not that hard to figure out. It also has a lifetime warranty. So break it then get it fixed. Of the 10 or so students I have given this unit to not one of them has gotten back to me saying they have had a problem with it. I am going to buy 4 of these, good price.
Customer Review: Best multipurpose tool I've seen. Weak on Phillips tho' Summary: 5 Stars
I've had one of these for a few years now. Great tool!
I find I use the scissors and pliers the most. I love the fact that EVERY tool locks securely. No more getting fingers caught as the screwdriver/knife bends back. A lot of multi-tools out there have *semi* secure locking. The Victronix (sp?) that I looked at was more expensive and didn't really LOCK, it had a notch which held pretty good, but if a lot of force was being applied (like for a tough screw in an awkward spot) it would collapse... Gerber has great design on its locking mechanism. The ONLY downside I've seen is the pointless phillips. It's dull to the point that it can't be used for the majority of phillips screws. So, for those I'm forced to dig out my old leatherman, and pray it doesn't collapse on me.
Customer Review: Best Most Practical Knife I've Owned - 7 Years Strong Summary: 5 Stars
Having pulled this knife out for a camping trip I thought I would say a few words. I purchased this knife while working as a contractor in the home improvement business per the suggestion of a few people doing the same. After a sluggish week spent breaking it in a bit I quickly learned to love this tool. I carried this heavily and used it daily for two years and since then have brought it on every vacations and every camping trip I've been on. The weight is light, the tools are strong. I've really punished this thing and its only gotten better in return. After a Letherman (a fine tool) I never seemed to get into, this was by far the best knife I have purchased. I rarely leave home for more than a weekend without this knife in my bag. I would give the MP400 more than 5 stars if I could.
Customer Review: Some flaws. Ok for the money Summary: 3 Stars
For the money it's an ok tool, with the following cons:
- There's no spring for the pliers, you gotta move it both directions to open and close.. this wouldn't
be such a problem if it all moved smoothly.. which brings us to..
- Everything moves so stiff, I know some reviewers stated this as being precision in manufacturing.. but from
practical point of view, it makes it annoying to use.
- The pliers don't retract flush into the body, the tip points out making it uncomfortable to use other tools.
- The handles kind of flex under stress.
- Lock mechanism for other tools feels very flimsy.
For the money I don't expect too much, but the flaws are pretty annoying for me to recommend wholeheartedly.
