Customer Review: Slim Day Carry

After having a bunch of different (and usually cheap) knives, I finally wanted a decent carry knife that I could trust. I have also been interested in the assisted opening knives for a while so the Gerber Fast interested me. I decided to head to the local Cabelas (had a $30 gift card) to look around a bit. The guy behind the knife desk immediately recommended the Fast. I liked the way it handled and bought the knife. $40 knife with a $30 gift card is a $10 knife. If my math is right that equals a pretty good deal.
The pros:
This knife is light for (what seems to me) a full size folder. In spite of this lightness, the pivot point feels solid when the blade is locked in place (a normal weak point), and the clip is fairly thick with two screws holding it in place. The assist system is quick and seems as though it is reliable.
The cons:
The blade was not as sharp as I would have hoped out of the box. This is not to say it is a butter knife. No, it will hurt you if you aren't careful and it will perform very well at normal tasks. However, I like to see a razor edge on knives. Probably an over expectation for a $40 knife, but I have my hopes.
Also, the safety switch is a bit "stickier" than I expected. This is of course to make sure the silly thing doesn't flick on and stab a hole in my buttocks. I just felt that it took a bit of playing to get use to the feel and this may turn off some people that want a lightning fast deploying backup weapon.
Overall:
This is an excellent knife for daily carry and I am not disappointed at all. I can always touch up the edge and the safety is not a problem after I got use to it.
I recommend this knife to anyone looking for a decent price knife.

The FAST Draw relies on Forward Action Spring Technology, or F.A.S.T., that was designed exclusively for Gerber and patented by famed Oregon knife maker Butch Vallotton. Butch is known as "Mr. Mechanism" in the custom-knife world, a tribute to his unique designs and exceptional understanding of opening and locking mechanisms. This new, proprietary blade opening concept means that you can deploy your knife quickly and easily using just one hand.
Of course, when a job calls for more deliberate actions, you can also open this knife in the traditional way, using the thumb stud. This is the closest you can get to a street legal switch-blade.
