Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-47162 Fast Draw Spring Assisted Opening Stainless Steel Fine Edge KnifeCustomer Review: good RIGHT HANDED edc knife Summary: 5 Stars
The basic design of this knife is very good for right handed use. It is very fast and easy to open one handed, the cross hatched design is very nice, it is very easy to grip and it looks great.
cons: my brother is a lefty, and he doesn't like this knife at all because it is hard to take the safety off and open the blade without putting the safety back on, it also doesn't clip into a left pocket very well and is more likely to open up in your pocket if it is carried on the left side. 4 stars overall would be 2 if I wanted to use this knife left handed. Also, this blade seems pretty sharp out of the box, and I know that the steel is very hard, but it doesn't cut very well for some reason. The only reason I can think of for this is that it has a noticeably concave grind on the edge which makes for a less durable edge. Hopefully, successive sharpening will re-profile the edge enough to fix this.
*edit*
My brother ended up getting an SOG assisted open knife, which he likes pretty well as it is more ambidextrous than this gerber, however, the gerber has a nicer feel to it, the handle has a metal liner which makes it stiffer and thinner compared to the plastic bodied SOG, and the assisted open action feels more positive. I've had it for about 3 months now and it has grown on me to the point that if it broke tomorrow, I would buy another one without a second though. I've also re-profiled the edge a little bit, it isn't terribly sharp as far as that goes, but it holds it's edge very well and after 4 or so initial sharpenings to get the blade where I wanted it, I haven't had to do anything in over a month to keep it there. I am raising my review from 4 to 5 stars for right handed use, still 2 for lefties.

Customer Review: Not a Good Self Defense Knife Summary: 3 Stars
Well, first off this is my first assisted opening knife, so operationally it was new to me flicking it out. Anyway, about the knife, it is a very well made. I have no problems with the quality of the construction of the knife.
But, how would it work for self defense situations? I carried it this weekend to see how easy it would be to get to it in a quick deployment situation. What I found is that the clip was to tight and it would be difficult to get off of my pocket. ok, no big deal, pair of needle nose pliers and it is looser. But what I noticed beyond that was that the single button used for locking and releasing the blade can cause deployment problems. Wanting to show off my new knife to a buddy of mine, I pulled it out of my pocket and tried to flip the blade. Damn, it was locked, good thing it wasn't a bad guy. What I found is that when you put the blade in your pocket, or when you reach for it, there is a very very good chance you have put the button in the lock position. So when you pull it out to deploy if it is locked, it is locked and you have to unlock it before flicking it out. Unfortunately you cannot disable this feature because this button also serves to lock the blade out and releases the blade for folding. So, unless you can train yourself in a very stressful self def situation to use fine motor skills to unlock a button, I wouldn't use it in that capacity.
So bottom line, good knife, but wouldn't use it for self defense purposes. I'll keep carrying my other non assisted opening Gerber knife for self defense.
Customer Review: A great knife and a great value. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this knife to replace my primary knife I carry after I recently lost it in the field. I haven't owned this knife too long, but I do want to share my initial reactions.
Pros:
Tight and sturdy hinge - solid hinge while still allowing smooth movement; seems like it will hold up.
Well designed thumb studs - ergonomic without being too big and snagging on your pocket.
Lightweight - plastic sides covering steel frame.
Sturdy spring steel pocket clip - removable if you don't like the clip.
Great value - Gerber knives are not in the same league as their prices.
Cons:
Wasn't very sharp out of the box - Gerber's sharpen up nice and take an edge, so it wasn't a deal-breaker for me.
The finger release is kind of hard to use - you can either use the thumb stud (which works awesome) or the finger release with your index finger, but unfortunately I find the finger release to be really hard to work.
The button lock is kind of weird - it does exactly what it is supposed to do, but it takes some getting used to.
The bottom line: This is a great knife to use as a daily carry. You might need to sharpen it up at first, but it seems tough as nails and should serve you well for a long time.
Customer Review: Not Quite What I Expected Summary: 3 Stars
I've owned many Gerber over the years and this is my last one. My last two Gerber like this one were made in China, and neither have lasted as long as my old EZ-Out 450 I was given used. The lock feels cheap, and has failed to fully lock several times. It has the typical hardened resin handle, nothing magical but has a good feel when its clean. There is noticeable flex in the handle. I prefer the handle of my cheaper Leatherman Crater. The blade is similar to other Gerber knives, and holds an edge. Definitely not for prying. It stinks using left-handed because the lock rests on the side. Compared to a Kershaw Blur the assist is hesitant and gives an impression of rough assembly. If you have a knife flying open in your pocket you have problems, but if a company needs to put a "safety" on it there's something wrong with the knife. The opening is quick and strong, but folding gives a grinding feeling. I love the clip design. This knife comes very dull, and will require a good sharpening before use. If you're considering this knife, consider the Kershaw Blur. The Blur is larger, but the silvered blade is comparable in price, and in my opinion of much better quality.
Customer Review: Perfect EDC knife. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great knife, Gerber has been known for quality for years in the knife industry and this one does not disappoint. The F.A.S.T. System is great, just apply a little pressure to the thumb stud and it quickly flips into position. It includes a built in safety switch so there are no accidental openings while in your pocket should you be rummaging around in there. The body of the knife has a great feel to it, I do wish it was a little more tactile in grip, but that is only a minor complaint. The blade has a great feel to it and has a great finish, and it comes VERY sharp and will keep an edge on it for a while. The pocket clip is fantastic as well, and just one more thing that goes to show you this is a REALLY well made knife. I can recommend this to you without any hesitation, because you will be very pleased to have this high quality of knife for this kind of price which is less than $30 dollars!
Just a thought, I picked up the fine edge knife because it suits all of my needs, they do make a 40% ( I think, could be more) serrated version of this knife if you need something with a little more bite too it, but its the same price and quality.
