Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-47162 Fast Draw Spring Assisted Opening Stainless Steel Fine Edge Knife

Customer Review: This is a fine knife
Summary: 4 Stars

I have the Winchester version of this Gerber knife and it's a quality product. The blade needed sharpening out of the box but that was my personal preference. It had a good edge out of the box and I suspect it wasn't sharper so people wouldn't end cutting themselves until they got used to the knife, i.e. no would could sue Gerber because they got cut.

I used a Smith diamond sharpener to put a razor edge on this blade and it's held the edge very well for several weeks of medium usage now.

The spring loaded action is a nice plus and the safety works well. I keep the knife on my belt but I can't envision the knife opening in one's pocket.

Customer Review: Poorly Constructed Knife
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this knife based on all the good reviews it received. The knife I received was difficult to open. The spring assist was extremely tight which made the knife feel unsafe. The safety button, which must be pushed up to fold the knife, would lock up and require two hands to disengage. The Gerber Fast Draw was neither smooth nor fast. The vast majority of the reviews of this knife on youtube are of a different version. The current production knife does not have a notch on the back of the knife to allow for index finger deployment. Previous production lots may have deserved such rave reviews but the knife I received in September 2010 definitely does not.

Customer Review: EXCELLENT KNIFE

What can I say it is a Gerber.
I was having trouble with the liner lock Quick folders. They opened fine but you really had to use 2 hands to close them or risked cutting yourself. With the Gerber side switch lock your finger is no where near the blade when you close it. "So no missing finger tip".
Here is the deal: I order these two Gerber's just for back up. I misplaced the one I have been caring since last Christmas,I was 99% sure it would and did show up, but I feel better having the back ups.
Ya I am a old man, carried a pocket knife for 40+ years even to class in High School. And this one is one of the BEST

Piece of junk in my opinion. The tip of the blade was rounded, the edge lasted a couple days, the locking mechanism is an insufferable POS and the "safety lock" inadvertently locks so when you pull the knife out you have to fumble with it to get it open. I had this knife for a few days and it ended up in a drawer. I bought the Kershaw Tanto Blur and it is 100 times the knife this one is for about $20 more. I would not recommend this knife. The Kershaw is American made and much higher quality. As far as I know, the Gerber is made in China and it is just about as good as you would expect from a Chinese made knife.

Customer Review: An outstanding blade
Summary: 5 Stars

Gerber's knives have always been my favorites. Ever since the introduction of the LST series, I have carried a synthetic-gripped Gerber in my pocket. This self-opener is a spear-point with a stout enough tip to preclude easy breakage. Both the full-size Fast Draw and its miniature cousin are built strongly enough for average service, and open efficiently and smartly on demand. Sadly, the line is made in China, but the quality of both blade and grip are quite good. This knife would cost at least twice what I paid if it were made in the U.S., so I will swallow my jingoism and carry it happily.
