Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 01471 Suspension Butterfly Opening Multi-Plier with SheathCustomer Review: the philips screwdriver is a piece of junk Summary: 1 Stars
I ordered this Gerber suspension butterfly multi-tool because of its cheap price. Let me say this: you get what you pay for. The tool looked nice and felt easy to use right out of the box. A main complaint is that the needle nose pliers were flimsy, but they felt very sturdy. However, the problem I had was with the philips head screwdriver. I tried to use it to unscrew a philips head on my keyboard and with ONE twist the philips head screwdriver tip disintegrated! The tips of the screw driver were instantly rounded or ground into nothing. The screwdriver was now useless with only ONE turn. I was shocked. I called Gerber and the woman I spoke to was "amazed" that this had happened. She claimed to own this same multi-tool for over 2 years without a single problem. They offered to repair it for free, but I would have had to pay for shipping to them. Instead I sent it back to Amazon and got my money back and bought a Leatherman Wave. Now THIS is a tool. Don't make the same mistake I did. When it comes to tools, you get what you pay for. It is better to spend a little more now because it will show in the quality of the tool. Stay away from this Gerber multi-tool.
Customer Review: Very nice multi-tool Summary: 5 Stars
Having this tool for a little over 2 years now, I have become to love this tool. It has all the features as any other multi purpose tools and it's made well.
-Love the suspension. I have other, more expensive multi-tool (leatherman and gerbers) and I'm always drawn to this one. It doesn't pinch you when using the pliers and the suspension makes it super easy to use.
-It has all the basic features as other mutli purpose tool at a fraction of the price.
-Had it over 2 years and it still works well.
-The sheath it comes with is nice. I like how it is made to be worn either upright, or sideways on your belt. I prefer the sideway mount, as it is flush with your beltline and doesn't poke you if you bend over in that direction. Other tools have the sheath where it is only able to be secured upright.
Overall, a good tool to have and I love the price that comes with it as well. Instead of paying $50-100+, I only paid in the $20s for a solid tool, from a solid company.
Customer Review: Great tool, but..... Summary: 4 Stars
I actually received mine for Christmas a couple of years ago. I love the overall tool. It looks good, works good, and so far has been tough. I've had no problem opening the pliers with one hand when needed, and the tool lock is very nice. I have had two issues with this thing. The first day I had it, I wore it on my belt in what Gerber's website calls the "ballistic nylon pouch". I put it on at about 7 in the morning, by 1 in the afternoon, i was carrying the tool in my pocket. The pouch couldn't stand up to my work conditions and my body usage during those conditions. The second issue I had, and I haven't had it with any of the other pieces, is the larger size flat blade screw driver broke off the first time I used it, I'm assuming this was a manufacturing defect, maybe a crack in the steel. So, other than those two things, I will definitely look for another one of these, or something comparable when this one wears out, but today, I'm on my way to my local leather shop for my 3rd leather pouch.
Customer Review: Great Multi Tool for the price Summary: 5 Stars
This is my first multi tool. I wanted the Leatherman brand, but it was just too pricey for me at this juncture. I am thoroughly pleased with the Gerber Suspension. It is made solidly. Great tool selection and sheath. The main knives(serrated and smooth) are great quality out of the box. The edges are the best ive seen in a knife out of the box. I stoned it a bit, and it is razor sharp now, with good steel quality. No burs after sharpening with hard stone.
My only gripes:
The scissors are small, and don't have a great finger hold. I wrapped a small piece of electrical tape around it to make the surface smoother on the fingertips, without it interfering with the closing of the tool. And that made a big difference for me. Another small issue is the phillips head screw driver is not well defined. So it would be hard to fit into standard phillips screw heads without the risk of stripping them.
Overall, this is a great tool for a great price!
Customer Review: Great tool, comparable to Leatherman, one setback... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a great multi-tool for someone like me: on a tight budget. I didn't want to spend the $60+ for a Leatherman, so I purchased this one and so far have been very happy with it. The finish is well done and has held up against the punishment I have dished out to it already working with it on a Dairy Farm and camping. The pliers are great great. The concealed spring is a huge plus as I don't have to worry about something getting in there and messing it up. the tools came sharp, and the knives have a thumb assist which make them easy to get to with one hand.
The only major issue I have with this is the locking trigger for the tools. It's very nice to have the tools locked in so they dont move, but the switch is so small you have to use your nails (if you have any) to push it down when you want to retract the tools. This is VERY difficult with rubber or leather gloves. Trust me, I've had the unfortunate luck of trying it. Besides that It's a great thing to have around.
