Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 01471 Suspension Butterfly Opening Multi-Plier with Sheath

Customer Review: Superb tool at a bargain price
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking to replace my Leatherman Wave multi-plier when I happened upon this Gerber item.
There are several superior design features for this Gerber over the Wave, including:
1. The grips don't pinch when you close the plier jaws.
2. The frame is tougher, with superior rigidity.
3. ALL the tools lock in their operating positions, not just the blades.
4. The shears don't jam closed.
5. The tool is spring-loaded to open the plier jaws, a very handy & time-saving convenience.
6. Excellent value for money while still covering the essential range of tools that are needed for general work.
My main use for multi-pliers is for ranching/farming and they get used every day for jobs that range from easy to tough, and on occasion, to abuse (it's always on hand when there's no time to get the ideal tool). And it's still real handy for fixing things on-the-fly at home. It's the one item I always carry until I hit the shower.

Customer Review: Great replacement
Summary: 5 Stars

At first I was dismayed that my wife got me this tool as a replacement for my Gerber Black Diesel multi-tool that TSA so generously removed from me. I had the Diesel long enough that I had the flick open down to a science and I didn't see an easy way to do that with this tool. About 5 minutes of playing with it and I realized that it was much nicer to use. It is easier and quicker to get at the tools. I think it's also safer to unlock the blades than the diesel was. I was constantly wondering how I hadn't managed to cut something off closing that tool up. It grips better in my hand than the diesel. It is not uncomfortable to use as a primary screwdriver/knife/phillips as a typical multi-tool seems to be. You don't have to open the tool to get at knife, and you can get it out much faster than the diesel's blade. I really liked the diesel, but having had both I'd take this one in a minute.

Customer Review: Jack of all trades master of none
Summary: 5 Stars

I really like this tool. Especially for the price. It is roughly a third the price of a similar Leatherman. The quality is excellent and it has all the tools you would want in a multi-tool. The size is perfect and handle comfortable. Some people have said the scissors lack a little. My thought is you are using them to trim a thread or cut a bandage in an emergency. If you want to sew a suit, use a real pair of scissors. The same for the saw, sure it is alittle small, but it works in pinch with reasonable expectations. The only tool I slightly missed was a file. All in all, the tools all work excellent and overall the tool is great value if you remember it's "A jack of all trades and master of none"! To anybody that feels any of the tools are lacking, my reply would be, that you are asking too much of a multi-tool and you need to go get a full size of the tool you are disappointed in.

Customer Review: Weak, won't stand up to heavy use. Don't buy.
Summary: 1 Stars

This tool broke under use when I tried to use it as part of a home project. I was using the pliers to straighten out a bent piece of metal, something that I've done tons of times with regular pliers. I figured that I could use the Gerber tool the same way.

I was wrong. When I encountered a particular stubborn piece of metal, and it wouldn't give, I had to crank extra hard. Instead of the piece I was working on bending, the Gerber tool broke! One of the small metal retaining pieces that prevents the plier handles from collapsing bent under the pressure of my hand.

Folks, I'm not that strong. I wasn't applying some superhuman amount of strength to the tool. Nevertheless, it still broke under the strain of me gripping it extra hard. I don't recommend anybody getting this tool if you're going to use it for serious work, or going to depend on it for an emergency.

Customer Review: Not bad
Summary: 4 Stars

On first inspection, these looked to be poorly made, but that was from a display unit at a local store.
After receiving the package, I noticed that they were of better quality than the display I had handled.
I was surprised to see on the package that the pliers themselves are made in Taiwan and the tools and sheath are made in China. I'm not a big fan of most anything made in China since 90% of everything I've bought was poor quality, but I have never had a problem with anything made in Taiwan.
Since the pliers are the source of the tool, I don't foresee a problem with them..
The sheath isn't the greatest, it reminds me of those cheapos you get with a cheap pocket knife at the swap meet, but I'm used to the leather sheath on my old leatherman that was handed down by my father.
Pretty decent for the price, but not as good as a classic American made tool.
