Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 01471 Suspension Butterfly Opening Multi-Plier with Sheath

Customer Review: Great item
Summary: 5 Stars

I was on the fence when buying this item at first because i red the reviews and it seemed that the quality went down so i was unsure about if i should spend the money on this one or pay a little more for one people say is better. Well, i just got it and have already started using it and i must say that it is awesome and is just like the description. I don't know much about the quality difference that people were commenting on but i needed this for just general use, nothing excruciating like daily use, but it has served me well and is perfect for all around use. The saws are really sharp and the pliers are amazing. The sheath that comes with it people have said bad things about but it has a belt loop on the back and is very strong and durable and don't understand how it does wrong. Overall, i love this item and if i would recommend it to everyone.

Customer Review: Good first multi-tool
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very good tool for the small-budget hobbyist.

Besides the small, fragile scissors and the lanyard clip taking up spots, the misc. tool features were well done. Mine was assembled a bit cock-eyed so wire-cutters sorta work. I wish the pliers were a little springier. Cosmetically this knife looks good; functionally it leaves a lot to be desired.

The knife-lock doesn't work or operate as advertised. They built the release of the rotating catch backwards so it is very easy for enough force to cause the knife to collapse.

If you're buying one of these as a present for a teen or relative in good standing, consider spending a little more for something safer and better thought out, like a skeletool. If you're buying this for yourself and don't expect much, this is a very good buy.

Customer Review: tools are of lower quality
Summary: 4 Stars

FWIW The one I received said Pliers made in Taiwan, tools and Assembly in China.

Pliers are fine, and spring suspension feature is pretty neat as I have not seen this before.

Only had a little time to play with this, but indeed the tools do seem a bit lower in quality.
Most notable, the straight knife blade, which should be a point of pride and quality control for any knife/tool company, comes roughly ground and somewhat poor quality compared to tools of higher quality, including Gerber's standalone knives. It came dull and can't even cleanly cut a sheet of paper without hanging up-something I'd expect from any new knife...Time to break out the sharpening stones, perhaps it's fixable

Hopefully those that get the complete made in Taiwan ones don't have this isssue.

Customer Review: Good tool, bad pouch
Summary: 4 Stars

I have nothing bad to say about the multi-toll, I use it for lots of stuff, almost everyday, at work, at home, whenever I need any of its tools.

However, the pouch is a complete piece of trash. It is not durable at all. The belt loop came out, so I turned it sideways, and eventually those straps came out too. In addition, the little grips for the knife kept catching on the pouch when I tried to take it out, but other times the Velcro would come undone and the multi tool would drop out. Luckily the tool is weighty so I heard it hit the ground. In the end I ended up having to buy a universal cell phone case from Meijer, which, sad to say, has worked MUCH better than the pouch.

BUT DON"T LET THAT STOP YOU FROM BUYING IT. The tool itself is excellent, just be prepared to get a new carrying case.

Customer Review: Pretty good for emergency tool
Summary: 3 Stars

Bought four of these on sale, and packed them into emergency kits. Also use one for general use around the house to gauge durability and usefulness.

The bad: Fairly bulky and wide handles, especially for the pliers. Smaller hands have problem getting a good grip. Also, the tools are shorter than their Leatherman counterparts. For example, the saw is about 1.5 inches shorter than it could be, because the design puts the entire saw inside the handle. Same with all the blades and tools.

The good: excellent scissors and quality of the tools has held up very well. Screwdrivers appear to be hardened, and are holding up very well. Pliers are quite good as well.

For the price I am very pleased, as I couldn't afford to buy more expensive multitools, and didn't want to downsize.
