Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 01471 Suspension Butterfly Opening Multi-Plier with Sheath

Customer Review: grips were way to far apart
Summary: 4 Stars

this is a sharp looking tool and everything works well but the grips were wayyyy to far apart when gripping it. I have big hands so thats saying something. What I had to do was take my dremmel out and shave part of the metal stoppers that stops it from going all the way together. I took about 3mm off (on each side), it only took about 5 minutes. now it fits perfectly. it was so far apart it felt open while it was closed. I couldnt imagine having to open it up any further to grip onto something with the way it was. it was seriously uncomfortable. ill add pictures pointing out where I shaved the metal at. w/ before and afters

Customer Review: Fine, lightweight multitool
Summary: 5 Stars

I had an old, large, Gerber tool that ended up in the wastebin at a TSA checkpoint on the way home from a sailing vacation. The price of, well, nevermind. Amazon had this one and I'd given a few to nephews for Christmas (from REI) and had heard no complaints.
It is indeed lightweight and has a much simpler tool lock/unlock system than the old one. As many have commented, the knives are not very long and the Phillips driver is a bit abbreviated. However the knives do work and the screwdriver was adequate to adjust the gooseneck on an old sailboat mast. Even the silly-looking scissors do work for small tasks.

Customer Review: Sturdy, but difficult to use
Summary: 2 Stars

This unit is well built and has served me well for more than a couple years, now. That said, I think it's very important to add that it's a real pain to get some of the tools out. Since purchase, the individual tools have been consistently stiff and difficult to get out. I frequently have to pull out the neighboring tool to get an adequate grip or to use a key to pry out the tool I want.

I'm no stranger to pocket knives and tools. I've been carrying them since I was about 10 and using them for even longer. This guy may be functional, but is very difficult to use for anything beyond the pliers.

Customer Review: Great Multi-Tool For Price
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this multi-tool for my boyfriend and he has found it to be quite useful. There are many different tools included and it is very versatile. The pliers have not broken yet, and the wire cutters are quite strong (used to cut many steel guitar strings). The blades are quite sharp, and the scissors, although small, serve its purpose.

For its price, I would recommend it to the average user. Obviously it will not replace a real tool kit, but with its small size, and included pouch, you can just put it in your pocket or clip it on your belt and carry it anywhere you want.

Customer Review: Quality so-so, returned it the next day
Summary: 2 Stars

The quality of the steel and the looks of the tool are ok. The 2 parts of the plier did not match up at the tip, something like 1-2 mm apart. Many of the tools are extremely hard to get out of the handle and the spring securing mechanism is hard to operate. This Gerber may be worth the $29 dollars but it was supposed to be used in case of emergency (in the car) by my wife and i could see that this was not a tool she would be happy with. Ordered the Victorinox Swisstool instead. I have had a Victorinox swiss army knife (with EVERYTHING) for years and have never had a problem with it.
