Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 08239 MP800 Legend Multitool

Customer Review: good knife overal, some drawbacks.
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall this is a very good knife. easy to use and it has one of the best wire cutters available. i'm an ammo troop working out in the desert building bombs for uncle sam. this thing gets used for everything.
there are 3 things i'd like to see changed on this thing:
1. better grips. this can slip out of gloved or sweaty hands fairly easily imo.
2. i wish this thing had easier access to some of the smaller gizmos. some of them you have to pull out the neighboring tool to get at the one you want. with the exception of only a few of 'em you can't open with gloves. the knife opens and closes easily with gloves.
3. biggest gripe: small bits of surface rust appeared almost instantly after i started wearing it. dunno if they need to upgrade the steel and/or coating, but this thing rusted before it even got used. granted, its only very small amounts, but it's definitely there.
even with its faults, i think its considerably better than leathermans and other non-springy types. it takes abuse well and has a changable saw blade and carbide wire cutting tips.

Customer Review: Best Multitool of Six
Summary: 5 Stars

I own six multitools (also custom Gerber 600, SOG Powerlock, a Bucktool, a Shrade Tough Tool and a Leatherman Wave) and I have to say that the Legend is the best one I own.

The Legend has many good points. All of the tools lock and can be opened without opening the entire tool except for, of course, the pliers and wire cutters. The replaceable wire cutters are the best ones going. I have had wirecutters fail. On the Legend you just replace them.

The handles are the most comfortable out there. They are the only spring loaded handles I have found. I especially like how the knife blade and Fiskars scissors have tabs to easily open them. The scissors cut better than any other. The short cutting area is made up by the superior cutting ability. I have cut plastic coated wire with no problem.

The only disadvantage is there is no traditional can opener, just a bottle opener. I have large hands so the size is no problem for me but it may be for some.

The Legend is the most expensive multitool I own but it is not much more than many others and it is worth the extra money.

Customer Review: Technician's secret weapon...
Summary: 5 Stars

I often work in difficult spots that can be described as cramped and inaccessible, and often at an elevated position. This multi-tool has made the difference for me because of the quality of the tool components and the fact that you can open this tool with one hand.

I have used it to cut and strip wires, open enclosures, adjust potentiometers, terminate wires, crimp butt connectors, hammer, pry, tighten nominal pipe thread fittings, file plastic shavings for clearance, adjust switches and tighten up casings. I have even used it as an electrical jumper to simulate a low DC voltage discrete input (not recommended for safety issues). These things I did with one hand, hanging from a shaky ladder and under a lot of pressure from the client and the competition.

As an added comment to this review, just today I broke the knife blade and the rubber-like grips have started to come off.

The blade, thats my fault and I only present it to you as a warning - it is not meant to pry with.

The handles are Gerber's fault and I think they should be revmoved from the next model.

Customer Review: Well Engineered...
Summary: 5 Stars

I wanted to spend some good money buying a useful product. Looking through the opinions on this page and those on Amazon.com I found this was the best engineered multi-tool in terms of usability and quality.

The only other item which could compare is the Leatherman Wave. However I found the fact that I didn't have to open the pliers to get at the tools and the fact that all tools locked into place were big points towards the 800 over the Wave.

The scissors and screwdriver tools are extremely useful. The pliers have spring loaded action and the wire cutters are replaceable. The only drawback to the 800 is that it is slightly bigger than the Wave. Not such a big deal to me...may not be true for others.

One more item to add: the tools on the Gerber appear to be stronger than those on the Wave. Definitely another good reason to choose the Gerber.

The Gerber 800 Legend definitely gets 5 stars! I recommend it to all who have a little more money to spend!

Customer Review: Good, but.... it sure could be a lot better
Summary: 3 Stars

Strengths: Seems to be a tough, well built tool.
Carbide wire cutters work well and are replaceable.
Weaknesses: Big and bulky with not many functions.
Pliers opening is TINY, much less than Leatherman Juice or the regular size Leatherman tools (supertool, original, etc).
I did some heavy knife cutting and tool hurt my hand through gloves. A big, expensive tool should have should have smoothly contoured edges.
While the scissors cut well, their shape and accessibility could be better.
After spending this much, I'd like to have an awl and tweezers.

I'm not certain my money was well spent. Leatherman supertool has served me well in past and might still be better. I can hope that plier pivot on this tool holds up better than Leatherman.
