Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-01629 LMF II Black Infantry Knife with 4.8-Inch Blade

Customer Review: Ugly yet beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

I got myself this knife for Christmas 2008 and have been carrying it every time I go hunting ever since. I wanted a very rugged survival knife for hunting, camping, and the coming revolution. I think this knife fits the bill. I have had a gambit of other knives in the past which I've carried and used for different hunting/camping applications. I must say I feel safest with this knife on my ankle. I've used a Winchester 4" folding buck knife, Ka-Bar 4" Hunter, Folding Remington Sportsman, Folding Gerber Gut hook Gator, Multiple Swiss Army Knives, and an Ozark Trails fixed blade 5" knife.
I wouldn't recommend trying to dress a squirrel with this knife, which is why I still carry the folding Winchester folder. But the Gerber will accomplish all other jobs. I haven't used it as a hammer and still don't recommend it as this is a knife, not a blunt object. The LMF 2 is very balanced and fits well in my hands... the grip is comfortable and I would not recommend this knife if you have small hands as this handle is rather broad.

The sheath is awesome for leg carry, waist carry or on your chest if you have a MOLLE vest. Very versatile.
No one in their right mind would use this sharpener included in the sheath unless no other options exists, but this is not to say that that would be the case in a survival situation. So it's a good idea, but fine honing of a blade is always better down bench side with precision sharpeners not this one.

Overall not the sexiest knife, but you wanted functionality over looks right? Otherwise why would you want a survival knife?

5 stars only because they don't have 4.5, due to the large size of the knife for most hunting applications, but if you're looking for a bada#% survival or Combat knife that is built to withstand any situation; remember Gerber worked with the military to design this knife to their standards.

Bottom-line: Buy this as a survival or combat knife not an everything knife... nothing like that exists. (It opens any kind of Christmas presents very well too.)

Customer Review: It's All You'll Need!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was immediately impressed by the weight and balance of this knife. The blade is the right length for multi-use and it's broad enough for decent strength. It has serrations down a good portion of the blade, which I require on my knives. The handle just begs to be grabbed; it fits my hand so well! It's a non-slip material with friction knobs and lengthwise indentations. A perfect fit for the knife in general. And the metal butt gives a unique balance to the knife, adding weight if needed for a slice or blow. The beveled point on the butt would surely break through most glass, easily crack walnuts, or deliver a "less lethal" blow to an opponent while certainly getting their attention, no matter where it landed. I'm also impressed by the holes that would allow for using paracord to lash the knife to a staff or to your hand in emergency situations. The plastic (Kytex?) sheath has plenty of openings for multiple tying or lashing options. I have black paracord woven through mine for those uses I mentioned. The top of the sheath securely grasps the hilt of the knife. And you have to appreciate the utility of a sharpener built right into the sheath. My version of the knife came with a nylon apparatus to which the sheath attaches. This allows it to hung from a belt, attached to Molle webbing, or function as a drop-leg option with the two leg straps that are included. These leg straps have a rubberized friction surface on the inside and quiet plastic buckles. Two nylon straps with snaps further secure the knife's handle. I appreciate the buckles and snap attachments because I have very good hearing and must assume any opponent might too. Hook and loop closures can be so noisy in tactical situations. Overall, my opinion is this is one great knife for many applications and a very good value for the money. Buy it, it's the only general knife you'll need!

Customer Review: One of the best knives out there. . . period
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me start off by saying that this is my favorite knife. I said that about the Seal pup elite to but that was before I had this workhorse of a knife. I will say that this is not the sharpest knife you will own but by god it is the toughest you can get for under 300 bucks. (Busse combat blades are near unbreakable, but you will have to fast for a couple weeks if you want one) several people have already suggested this and I'll do it again. Watch the destruction test. This knife has it all-hammer with it, break stuff, cut live wires, I've never seen a knife that can perform so many tasks, and I own several knives. I've had the pleasure of using it in the woods several times and I can assure you that it is dependable. I mentioned this won't be the sharpest knife you ever own, this is true. I was able to get my seal pup elite sharper than this Gerber but the pup lost its edge after chopping through a piece of wood, while this one remained rock solid through several pieces of wood before re-sharpening, and even then it only took a few swipes through the sharpener on the sheath to get it back to where it was. That brings me to another point, the sheath. Alot of people on here have complained about the bulkiness of the sheath but I love it. Its almost as versatile as the knife it comes with, I mean you get everything, you can put the knife in either way for you lefties, it has a sharpener, comes with two removable leg straps, and it's MOLLE compatible. It has two straps to hold the knife in place but you don't need them, the knife sheath secures it just fine. I can go on all day but I don't have the time. Just look all these positive reviews, surely 50 some-odd people can't all be idiots right? Oh and just on a side note you can get the knife engraved on Gerbers web site but you'll pay an extra 30 bucks just for the knife plus another 20 for the engraving than you would pay here.

Customer Review: Excellent knife.... if you don't mind serrations.
Summary: 4 Stars

Seeing as how this knife is meant for military and survival situations, I understand the need for serrations. But having the option to do without would certainly be nice.

That said, this knife is a beast. It is rather large and not something I would not feel comfortable whipping out on a camping trip at the risk of looking like a Rambo wannabe. But for a survival situation, this knife would be almost ideal. The blade is thick, strong and holds a good edge. The included carbide sharpener in the sheath is a nice feature.

The lashing holes are located nicely, and make it easy to lash it to a pole for use as a spear, The heft of the blade makes for good penetration. It works well for splitting small wood using a baton, and the butt of the handle makes for a decent hammer in a pinch.

The handle is a soft rubber handle with good grip when wet, though not with gloves. The lack of a full tang is not a con here, as the handle is insulated against electrical shock, and to be honest you can't even tell it is only a 3/4 tang. I have not tried to use it to cut wires yet, and don't anticipate doing so ever. But it is nice to have that option.

Some people have noted that the knife is a bit tough to unsheath, but I found that to be a pro rather than a con. I would rather my knife be a little tough to deploy rather than it get caught on a stick while bushwhacking and have it go flying into the underbrush. It is molle-comaptible, and comes with two straps with rubber threading to keep the straps where you put them when deploying, rather than have them ride up your leg.

I think I would prefer the Seal Pup Elite from SOG over this blade, but I have not used the Seal Pup extensively as I have the LMF II so it is tough to tell.

Customer Review: Gerber LMF II foliage green
Summary: 4 Stars

This was obviously design for casual military utility. The knife does well to say, cut webbing, rope, cloth, open MREs and boxes, wedge open a locked door, pry open a locked or rusted live electrical panel, saw thru sheet metal, break plexiglas, or carve obscene graphics on a wood table while waiting for Oscar Mike. It has a complex Molle sheath system that will stay firm and quiet on your LBE even while jumping from your UH60. The handle is big, and very comfortable, and electrically and mechanically isolated from the blade. So, when you jam it into a HV panel you wont be electocuted, and when you whack on it with a rock to cut thru a concrete slab your hand will stay comfy. It has stout drop point shape and soft stainless that will most like bend rather than snap when misused as a pry bar. It has an oversized swept hilt that protects even the biggest 'tards in your unit from cutting their hands :\

The serrations are deep and about 2/3 of the straight part of the blade. But they are on the wrong side for righties. Therefore using the knife carving or whittling or chopping thru a 2x4 or a tree branch can only be done with your left hand, or only with the short and mostly curved unserrated tip region. And then, thanks to the soft 420 stainless, you will be sharpening it every 10 minutes. Be advised, Pulling the knife out requires two hands and a surprising amount of force due to the surprisingly strong sheath friction lock (probably another Airborne requirement?). Knife + sheath is over a pound, thats a lot for a 5" knife. Summary, this knife is not optimal for woodwork, or backwoods hiking and survival.

5 stars for military, 3 stars for camping/civilian. I keep it in my toolbag. Average 4 stars.
