Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-01629 LMF II Black Infantry Knife with 4.8-Inch BladeCustomer Review: perfect everything knife Summary: 5 Stars
the knife is a great knife. works as described. only issues with the knife is the simple fact that the velcro at the bottom just doesnt hold well after a lil over a year, and the combination of sand and overuse doesnt help. my solution to this was to simply wrap 550 paracord through the holes in some sort of decorative design, yet allowing enough slack in the back so that you can lift up on the webbing to access the sharpener. for the leg straps, i pretty much found them useless to me and just hook it up to the molle gear assembly for my backpack and that gives me the easy access as a ka-bar. another issue is it takes a bit of breaking to remove the tool with ease. it kind of sticks in the sheath. A GREAT SAFETY FEATURE, but not really acceptable to the persons who want convenience while unsheathing. this is a great knife and i am sure that gerber is going to make something that is even better. they always do. but for the time being, for a sheath knife that will hold up no matter what you put it through, this is the perfect buy. (make sure you research the areas where you buy it. if you do not buy from this site, many stores will inflate the price) i am military and have been issued this knife for combat in the desert. i have seen it for as low as 50.00 and as high as 130.
Customer Review: Excellent Knife Summary: 5 Stars
Got this knife about a year ago for around $60 on amazon. Excellent steel on the knife, and the grip is very comfortable in the hand. The knife is a tad bit bigger than i had anticipated, but only by about a few inches (I checked the dimensions just didn't visualize the blade length). The steel point on the end is very good, and certainly gets the job done. I did some "field" work with it. Our Fire Training class had a demo where we brought in a car to practice "victim extrication". Using the knife, I slashed a tire to stabilize the vehicle. The knife did this task rather easily. I also used the steel point on the bottom to smash both the side and rear window of the Oldsmobile vehicle. The point did this with ease. I then slashed the seatbelts with it, which ended up cutting better than several "seat-belt cutters" our class had. This series of tests really proved to me what the knife was capable of.
I would say that my only complaints are that:
1.The steel point on the end rusts rather easily.
2. The paint coating on the blade does not block rust very well.
3. The serrations are cut so thin that they tend to break upon tougher tasks like cutting plastic.
All in all a great knife. Thanks for reading my review.
Customer Review: Outstanding tactical knife Summary: 5 Stars
This is the best knife I've ever had, period. I enjoy hiking for days in a row and having a good knife is probably the most important thing to have on your side (along with a good friend and map, of course).
Pros:
1. Sturdy and well built with a great thick blade (you can use it as a hatchet if you hammer it with a stone)
2. Crafted *IN THE USA, YES SIR*: this is no cheap Chinese knock-off (sorry guys, you can't be great at everything)
3. Isolated butt-cap, which means that, if by an extremely unfortunate accident of life, you happen to dig into a electrical main, you won't die. (Apparently, this would be useful if you're into urban combat: that's what they say in the manual)
4. Comfortable grip material: it feels like your hand binds well to the knife.
5. Ships with a good sheath, very technical and complete with a neat sharpener: definitely a plus.
Cons:
1. Weight (3/4 lbs) and size mean this is no man-purse knife. If the TSA folks catch you with that I guess you better have no plans for the following 3 days.
2. You need to sharpen it before using it.
3. My girlfriend freaks out when she sees the knife.
Overall, a great knife for a wide range of use. Have fun!
Customer Review: One of the best large survival knifes out there. Buy it! Summary: 5 Stars
The Gerber LMF II is my definant favorite knife. It is very well made (In Portland Oregon)I have used it alot in the out-of-doors hiking and camping.I put it through the test that I put all my survival knives through, the -fire wood making- test, in which it preformed eceptionally well. It chops with ease and then batons, splits and shaves the wood very well while not losing its edge. The ergonimics on the handle are very good, it looks in the pics that its square handle might not be too comfortable, but it is just the opposite. I love to just hold this knife, the thumb ramp is good and the palm swell is wonderfull. Another thing that I love about the LMF II is its features, it has the sharpener and the hammer, the lashing holes, the serrations and a spike on the butt. One important thing that I wanted to mention is the sheath. The sheath is one of the coolest out there, I put a lot of time into researching knives before I settled on this one and its sheath puts all the rest to shame, it has a slim profile with so many options and functions. For around 60~70 bucks, this knife is THE BEST deal that you will EVER find A-N-Y-W-H-E-R-E!
This knife definantly deserves more than 5 stars. Do yourself a favor, Buy this knife.
Customer Review: Great knife, fairly useless for a civilian Summary: 4 Stars
When I bought this knife, I was seeking a fairly large knife with an incorporated sheath that could be easily attached to a belt, or to my shin. My goal was to have a knife capable of easy use in self-defense, one that might deter criminals, but not arouse suspicion with law enforcement officials. I figured this would be a logical choice.
What I did not factor into my purchase was that the 4.8" measurement means the blade itself. In reality, the whole knife is a little over 5 inches. Granted, it is a lovely knife, that serves it's purpose quite effectively, and I would whole-heartedly recommend it to any soldier or law enforcement official, but for a civilian, it is probably a little much. Therefore, I intend to return it. My decision is merely based on the fact that I do not have a use for it.
Would I recommend it? That sort of depends on the situation. Are you a hunter? A soldier? A police officer? Or one aspiring to become any of these? Then absolutely! This is the knife for you. Are you a civilian seeking a knife for self-defense? The no. Because the mere size and bulk of this knife would probably make you appear to be the very criminal you are trying to defend yourself from.
