Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-01629 LMF II Black Infantry Knife with 4.8-Inch Blade

Customer Review: Good Enough For Government Work
Summary: 5 Stars

I've always had great experiences with Gerber, from their multi-tools to the basic little pocket knife. And the LMF II doesn't disappoint.

I received one as a gift about a 6 weeks before my last deployment and liked it so much I ordered 20 for the guys in my unit. Every knife saw daily use during our 18 months in Afghanistan. We used them for anything and everything. It's not exactly what I'd consider a fighting blade, because of it's size. But it does hold up so well to all kinds of abuse, that I'd have no problem using in a combat situation.

For anyone looking to buy a good quality utility blade that looks great and is well made...the LMT II is great for the price. Don't be deterred by the lesser reviews. Anyone who buys knives knows they often come semi-sharp, so expect to do some sharpening. Also, you need to know what a particular knife is designed for...if you intend to punch a car door with this, you'll be a fool with a broken blade. Yes, I know from experience...but I sent it off to Gerber abd they replaced it no questions asked. FYI: Gerber is one of the few companies that truly back their product. Five years ago they exchanged a multi-tool that got fused in an electrical incident.

Customer Review: great knife
Summary: 5 Stars

(stephen is my dad)
i got this knife a month ago and it is amazing. its a beast. i cut a tree down that was like 5 inces in diameter with it. and it was still rasor sharp. the sharpener is very nice also and could be very useful out in the backcountry or in a survival situation. the glass breaker on the pommel coud be useful for someone in the military i guess but i dont need it. the sheath is made of strong fiberglass with a rubber coating. it comes with straps to strap it to your leg if you want but i prefer to wear it on my belt with just the lower strap to keep it from getting caught on things. since it was originally designed for the air force it has 2 nylon straps that can be buckled around the handle of the knife to keep it from coming out of the sheath and it is very tight in the sheath so that if you were jumping out of an airplane (or runnning through the woods) it would have no chance of coming out of the sheath.
the knife is very well balanced and would be very effective in a knife fight also. and the sheath is antidextris; you can put the knife in it eaither way.
it is a very nice knife and i would reccomend it to any outdoorsman or militaryman .

Customer Review: Knife great - replace sheath
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great knife. It is just the right length, the blade is sharp, the serration useful, and the thickness of the blade makes it sturdy enough for a wide variety of tasks. The grip also feels very good, the knife sitting solidly in your hand, and allowing for pressure to be applied to in a variety of directions (cutting downward, upward, or sideways).
My only complaint is about the sheath. Maybe you need all the various attachment options if you're a Navy SEAL, but as an ordinary user, you might as well throw away most of the tangle of Velcro straps that greets you when you open the box. Most annoying however, is the knife retention mechanism. It is an overkill version of the Glock knife design, fundamentally a very good idea. But as other people have noted in their reviews, it is very tight. It requires some effort to extract the knife with one hand even under normal conditions; if you have to pull out the knife with wet, cold, numb hands (not an unlikely scenario in the kind of environment where you're going to use such a knife most), you may be in trouble. I'm planning to have a custom leather sheath made for it; the knife is well worth the extra money for that.

Customer Review: Excellent Survival Knife
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a wannabe of the characters on satelite/cable shows like "Man vs. Wild" and "Survivorman," and I am one of those typical weekend camper/hikers.

With that in mind, I wanted to invest in a fixed-blade knife (i.e., a survival knife) that would be rugged and durable in most outdoor settings and circumstances, be a good value, be of high quality, and last a lifetime. I did a fair amount of research using this criteria to compare and contrast other knives with the Gerber LMF II; and, in my opinion, this knife exceeds all reasonable expectations. I also am very much pleased with the Molle-attachable sheath; it can be lashed around the lower leg, thigh, or waist.

A possible downside to the knife is its weight and length. Yet I would be hard pressed to imagine it being able to cut firewood from trees and branches or serve as a spear point or dirve a nail if it were not the size and weight it presently comes in. See the product description for more detailed information on the size and weight.

All in all I am very much pleased with the versatility of the knife and would highly recommend anyone seriously consider having a look-see at it.

Customer Review: Superior Survival Knife
Summary: 5 Stars

Sept. 5, 2008
This knife will, first, outlast it's owner. It will also take anything I've thrown at it. It is light, simple, and very solid. The sheath is MOLLE compatible, and has an integral sharpener. It's a mean, well-built knife.

Edit update Dec. 14, 2009
Not only that, but I managed to train myself (although I'm still rough at it) to throw this knife, with amazing effect; just practicing against an everyday fence will tear the fence up so let's just say if you can stick someone with this, they won't be getting up anytime soon. I find it's balanced enough for the task of throwing, so I'll continue it. I think I'm going to buy another one, so I can have one to throw and one to fight with, I think this knife is superior when it comes to fighting.

It's very satisfying to stick a fence with this, it makes me feel like an American Spetsnaz. If you need a good knife that will take a thousand rebounds in the rain, muddy and mangled conditions, and constantly hitting rocks, or anything else, this is for you.

The reason I got this is for a combat bug-out bag, and I bet this will be the last of my gear to ever fail me.
