Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-01629 LMF II Black Infantry Knife with 4.8-Inch Blade

Customer Review: Solid knife, bit heavy
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall, a very solid knife. Depends entirely on what you're going to use this for. I'd say this is probably not an ideal backpacking knife. It's definitely a survival knife meant for those who are out in the real wilderness. I enjoy backpacking, but I'm not super hardcore. Thus, my list of pros and cons comes from the point of view of an average backpacker/hiker/camper.

Pros:
- Feels good in the hand.
- Solid sheath, many different ways to mount.
- Has three holes so you can lash it to a pole if need be.
- Butt of knife can be used as a hammering tool.
- Has both serrated and non-serrated.
- Loop on knife sheath is button, not velcro. (personal preference).
- Built in sharpener.

Cons:
- Too heavy for my taste.
- Knife is a bit long, making sheath is a bit cumbersome.
- Sheath is too tight. Tight is definitely better than too loose, but it definitely makes things inconvenient.

I couldn't give the knife five stars because it didn't satisfy my needs completely, but it's pretty close. If I could give it 4.5, I would.

Customer Review: Best weekend survival knife for your money
Summary: 5 Stars

I got my Gerber LMF after a lot of research. I own nearly 50 knives but a lot of them are collectible and therefore not for daily carry. I wanted something that would hold up to a lot of abuse and be versatile for carrying in different situations. This is the kind of knife I can take fishing, kayaking, hiking and camping and not ever have to worry about it not performing. Most of the said survival knives fell way short when it came to the sheath and the blade material.(SOG and Buck) The Gerber LMF is far superior in both of these categories. The blade is just the right thickness and length for a good all around survival/outdoor knife. For me the sheath was probably the biggest selling point. I can carry it almost anyway I want to no matter what I am wearing. I carried a Gerber Mark II in the Army and this knife definitely beats that in carry options and performance. I also own a Kabar and a Navy Mark II survival knife and the LMF puts both of them to shame.I would highly recommend this knife to anyone looking for a great survival/outdoor knife. Great job Gerber on both the knife and the sheath.

Customer Review: Best Designed Survival Knife
Summary: 5 Stars

This model of knife was originally designed to be an ASEK (Aircrew Survival Egress Knife) and came with a cord cutter hook. The Infrantry Knife aspect came about after it was given to US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq as a demo item. It is a rugged knife, and has a window punch on its butt and a full tang blade completely insulated by the grip. This aspect came in handy to a certain sniper team in Iraq who cut a power line to a 250 KW Generator in order to dim the lights illuminating their position among around 100 insurgents. The electric arc put an eighth of an inch gash in the knife's blade, but the operator remained unshocked and was able to survive the incident. I am using it currently in Iraq, and I have found that though it isn't the sexiest of edged weapons, it is by far one of the most unyielding. Built in sharpener in sheath is nice, if you know exactly how to use it, otherwise you will nick the blade up a little. Came originally in desert tan/coyote brown, now out in straight black so I will have to by another one for my darker endeavors.

Customer Review: Sturdy knife
Summary: 4 Stars

I like this knife. It has a good edge to it and feels good in my medium sized hands. The grip on it is nicely molded. Comes with a composite sheath with straps to mount in various ways. You can mount it to your thigh, belt loop, ankle or MOLLE system. The straps have silicone strips on them to prevent slippage. The sheath also has a built in sharpener, although it doesn't seem like it puts a razor edge on the knife. It would be good for in the field though if you did not have anything else. The sheath grips the knife very securely. The finish on the knife itself has held up well as well as the edge.

The only gripe I have about this knife is that after several times re-sheathing, the rubber handle has pryed away from the metal. This is because the nylon webbing to hold the sheath to the straps near the opening of the sheath rubs on the knife handle. I fixed this by putting a small dab of Gorilla glue in the area of the rubber where it had separated and seems to holding. Overall, a good utility knife.

Customer Review: One of the strongest knives ever.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this knife for about six months and I think it the strongest knife I own and I have 218 knives. This knife is well balenced and it has a good sheath for military use. The sheath is not good for normal use becous the knife is really hard to get out even for me and I am about six feet tall and weigh 250. I am making a custom leather sheath for it. I use this knife every day around my farm and it is still razor sharp. The serrated section of the blade is long enough to be usefull and still have a long normal blade. The pummel on the ack of the knife is great for smashing things and can be usefull in combat as well. I keep this knife with me 24\7 adn love it. The knife fits well in big hands as well as small hands. The fact that the this is not a full tang knife may make it sound weak but it is actually alot stronger than a full tanged kife. This is in my opinion the best knife gerber has ever made and I would reccomened this knife to anyone who does hard work and needs a strong knife.
