Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-41121 Prodigy Survival KnifeCustomer Review: Perfect survival knife, odd sheath Summary: 4 Stars
I only write reviews if I feel strongly about a product, positive or negative.
In this case, I am very happy with the knife. I would not replace it with any other.
Of course, a knife is a tool, and the tool has to suit the purpose. My purpose is a single blade for hiking/camping/scuba/survival use. My requirements are a full tang, thick blade, partial serrations, lanyard hole, NON-carbon steel, and a versatile sheath. This knife replaces my old US military survival knife which I've had for about 20 years.
This knife is the ideal size for my hand, and meets all the above requirements.
My one complaint is the poorly designed sheath. The scabbard(plastic part which actually covers the blade) looks like it would separate from the sheath(the nylon part connecting the scabbard to your belt/pack etc..). It should separate, and looks like it would, with cosmetic-only velcro tabs extending from the scabbard around the sheath, but it does NOT separate. Bizarrely, it is riveted to the sheath. For that oversight, I took away one star. Gerber really should have known better. If I want to mount the knife on my scuba BCD, I will need to either mount the whole scabbard(ridiculous), or permanently remove the rivets and thread holding the scabbard to the sheath.
One more oversight on Gerber's part, the full tang could be used for hammering, but they angled the end of the handle to create a 'punch'. Obviously, the point of the knife itself is a readily available punch for shattering tempered glass, etc.. better to leave the handle end flat for use as a hammer.
The Gerber LMF has a bigger heavier handle, but the blade is about the same dimension, so the Prodigy is the better fit for me.
Overall, highly recommended. When I only carry one blade, this is it.

About Gerber: A History of Innovation Savvy. Moxie. Craftsmanship. Attention to detail. These are just a few of the company traits that have contributed to Gerber's emergence as a world leader in outdoor gear. Joseph Gerber started Portland, Oregon's Gerber Advertising back in 1910, and one Christmas, he hired a local knife-maker to craft 25 sets of kitchen cutlery as client gifts. The knives were so popular Mr. Gerber ultimately left his agency to launch Gerber Legendary Blades in 1939. It makes sense, really. An idea man gets the idea of a lifetime and turns it into a major outdoor brand--one that commands respect among knife lovers and knife makers alike. And now that same high regard is spreading in new directions, in the form of many outstanding products such as tools, personal L.E.D. lighting, and more.
