Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-41121 Prodigy Survival KnifeCustomer Review: Field test results: Success Summary: 5 Stars
I have owned this knife for nearly a month, and I was finally able to give it a proper field test. I spent a few days out in the woods and used the Prodigy for everything, from shelter building to firewood collecting to food preparation. It performed beautifully in all respects. I was able to cut 1-2" diameter wood easily in a short time, but its light weight and size made whittling easy as well. The knife came out of the case shaving sharp (tested on my now-patchy leg) and stayed sharp through most of the test. After many, many choppings, it was fast and easy to sharpen. I wasn't sure if I would like the serrated portion of the edge, but I found it extremely useful cutting paracord and fleshy plants. I found the handle very comfortable to handle for long periods of time. The "glass breaker," which I thought would have limited usefulness, was actually helpful in puncturing food cans and anything else that needed a good bashing. The sheath seems to get a lot of hate from reviewers, but for my purposes it works fine. It seems sturdy enough, and I particularly like that it doesn't need to be buckled secure the knife. Overall, I think this knife is very good in terms of durability and usefulness, and hard to beat at this price point.
Customer Review: decent knife, awesome sheath Summary: 4 Stars
I needed a knife to take camping that I could beat on without getting upset when it got scratched. After using the knife, I feel the blade geometry could be better. I feel the grind angle could have been more accute. It comes with a fairly obtuse grind angle that will probibly hold an edge longer then an accute angle, but by sacrificing sharpness. For many people, the edge on this knife with be fine. If you are constantly in knife forums or collect knives, you might want to reprofile the knife.
What I do like about it is the sheath. The sheath is made from plastic but has a textured feel to it. The nylon portion that attached to the plastic is designed to attach to molle gear. I planned to use this camping so a leather sheath was out of the question due to leathers poor ability to shead water. The sheath holds the knife in firmly with a audible click when inserted.
If you need a knife of this size to beat on, and expect do so some prying, this is a good option. If you just need a sharp edge and dont expect to pry, hammer, cord word, or dig, I think you might be better off buying a knife with a thinner blade for slicing.
Customer Review: My Awesome "Tool Knife" for Red River Gorge Summary: 5 Stars
I love this knife. I own a variety of knives, but this is my first "commando" style knife. This knife is sharp, strong, comfortable and balanced. The weight and grip of this knife is all business.
I bought it to take camping after a recent bear vs. man attack in Kentucky. It is suitable for chores as well as self-defense (bears, wildcats, wild dogs, etc.). I don't know if I am ready for bear wrestling, but if I lose, it will not be the fault of this knife.
The sheath is so-so, but it will work until I find or make a better one. Perhaps it can be modified to work better. The double straps at the handle and the too-tight grip on the blade make it a two-handed operation to get this knife out of the sheath when it's strapped to my side. I prefer a sheath that grips the blade loosely and has a single strap (snap not Velcro) to secure the handle.
I find myself using this knife around the house for chores that do not require a commando knife, i.e. box cutting, carrot chopping, cutting price tags off of things... anything that gives me an excuse to whip out this bad boy.
Customer Review: Not bad. Few quirks for good for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I did a lot of reseach into the Gerber family of larger fixed blade knives. I had my heart set on the LMF series until I came across this. For the price difference, I don't see how you can go wrong for a great general purpose blade that's of a decent size.
My complaint is that the sheath is bigger and chunkier than it needs to be. There are probably 10 different straps and attachments on, around or on the back of it. I can understand that having the ability to strap this thing to a MOLLE vest might be a nice thing, but I'm not seeing anyone do it. I actually took a seam ripper and removed several straps, snaps and other attachments that I couldn't see a need for.
I also read on another review that the thing is blade heavy. I'd say that's true, but it's not terrible. I'm happy with the item overall, and definately pleased considering that I spent less than $50 for it. It will probably live in my GHB, and I'm confident that I've got a strong tool if I should need it
