Customer Review: METS MY SPECIALIZED NEEDS PERFECTLY...A very handy product to have around.

I suppose that with this item, as with all tools, in comes down to owning and using the right tool for the right job. I have certain specialized needs and carefully read and research any product I buy to see weather or not that product meets my particular needs for the job I intend to use it for.
In the case of this Gerber hatchet/saw combination I found that met all the criteria I demanded and further more, after using it, I found that it exceeded my expectations.
I carry this combination with me in my truck...always. I carve, make, create canes and am constantly looking for young saplings to harvest (many trash trees along roadsides) and the cure for a couple of years before I start working on them. I also live in the middle of the woods which I pretty much leave alone and only trim and very selectively remove unwanted growth. This combination tool works wonderfully in both areas.
First, it is rather inexpensive when you consider the quality and what the tool was meant to be used for. Now you cannot buy something like this and expect to start your own logging business, nor can you compare it to a product that cost many times more than this. Remember, you need the right tool for the job you want it for.
I no longer camp, but I see no reason that this item could not be used for that purpose. On the other hand, tools are such a personal item that what might be perfectly acceptable to me, may be another persons bane. Again, research here is important.
I found the axe to be extremely sharp and have had not problems what so ever keeping it that way. Due to the type of cutting I do with it, I have to admit that the blade has come under some abuse. With a good file and sharpening tool it has been no problem keeping the various nicks and notches out of the blade. The saw is extremely sharp! New users should take warning here...this is no toy! You can hurt yourself with this thing! But hat being said, a sharp saw blade is much safer than a dull one...just like any sharp instrument. After heavy use, I personally have never had a problem with the saw portion of this tool accidentally sliding from the handle.
As a side bonus...and I hate to even bring this up, but we sadly now live in a world where a man; indeed a family, cannot be too careful. This hatchet is extremely maneuverable and makes a wonderful, and I must say, a comforting defensive weapon to have available if needed. We travel a lot and go into not only extremely isolated places, but also travel through many urbane center. Again...a person simply cannot be too careful!
All in all I am extremely happy with this product as it meets my particular needs perfectly.
