Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-41578 Gorge Folding ShovelCustomer Review: Great shovel, Im happy, but better out there Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great shovel, great price. Seems high quality. I use it around the campsite quite a bit. I have not dug anything more than a firepit with it, and wouldnt recommend digging any more than that with it. Great for clearing 'stuff' away for your tent placement, building or emptying a fire pit, that kind of stuff. Fits nicely in a pack too.
I hate doing this, but this is the #2 ranked shovel Ive owned, there is another, much better one out there. It is made by Glock. Yes, Glock, the people who make the pistols. Glock, Inc. started by making knives and shovels for the Austrian military, and the shovel and knife pre-date their pistols by several years. The knife, not so good, the shovel is AWESOME. Lightweight, sturdy, simple, folds up very small, even has a nice saw hiding inside the handle. While they are HARD to find, ordering one from a specialty store will be worth your while.
The Gerber shovel is great, no complaints, but its still ranked #2 in my book. One advantage, it costs about 1/2 as much as the Glock shovel.
Customer Review: Be aware of what you are purchasing ... Summary: 3 Stars
For what it is, this shovel is very good. My only real complaint is that it is very dull; the "digging edge" could stand to be much sharper, as it is, it is not even rounded off. That's nothing that can't be fixed with an angle grinder, though :)
As far as construction, it's extremely solid, rugged, and well made, pretty much what you'd expect from Gerber.
What you should be aware of before you buy, though, is that it is *very* small. This isn't comparable to the GI "trenching tools", or the Coleman camp shovels you're probably familiar with. It is closer to a garden spade. Folded, it will literally almost fit into your pocket, actually will fit into a larger ski jacket pocket. The blade is smaller than my (adult male) hand, including fingers. I bought this to put in my trunk for digging my car out in an emergency ... it is just barely big enough to be useful for that purpose.
So, if the size is appropriate for your needs, this is a great shovel.
Customer Review: Heavy for its size, but it packs down well... Summary: 4 Stars
For those looking for a latrine shovel for back country hiking, this will work for you, but mind - it is heavy. You may think 2-3 pounds isn't much, but it can be. That said, is fairly well constructed and can serve double duty as a hammer.
Pros: Rugged construction. Collapses down pretty well. Grip is contoured to be comfortable.
Cons: It is heavy (for its size), but that does contribute to its ruggedness. The 'blade' could lock into place a bit more securely than a screw-down ring. Has a Hammer 'head', if you'd call it that.
Overall: It's a nice shovel if you don't mind the extra few pounds. Also good for your car, should you get stuck on snow and you need to dig some space out to get rolling again.
P.S. To Gerber - have you guys ever thought of making interchangeable blades on something like this? Have a large PC avalanche blade and then the smaller steel blade for dirt/soil? Just a thought...maybe I should do that.
Customer Review: Gerber shovel Summary: 4 Stars
This shovel has gotten me out of a lot of binds. I like keeping it in my truck because I never know when I can use it. I like helping people out. I have helped get cars from being stuck on rocks in campgrounds, cars being stuck in the snow, and other stuff too. Wearing this on your belt is not practical. It is a great shovel for the price - something I plan to keep with me at all times. This "shovel" is extremely compact, great for those with limited space. But, if you expect to do much digging with the tool you had better look elsewhere. If you are looking for an emergency shovel for emergency situations, then this is for you. I bought it because of limited space in my Explorer and although I would have preferred something a little bigger, this is close to what I was looking for. It is well-make, and very sturdy. It does have some weight to it for its size, so if you are backpacking you may want to look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Mine Broke Summary: 3 Stars
When i was snow shoveling our walkway to the door there was a couple inches of thick compacted ice that the regular shovel couldnt do....
so there for i unfolded my gerber shovel and used it like an axe with its edge to chip away the ice...
After using it quite roughtly for about a half hour the head broke off....
even though it broke i dont think it deserves less than about 3-3.5 stars... because it was only 15 bucks and im pretty shure i can weld it back on or somthing...
Its size is awsome but just know it can break, i was indeed kinda rough with it...however i was not trying to break it....
Great for the money, but i am currently gunna have to look for a more robust shovel.
