This is a very well made and sturdy little shovel. The spade is a little small but the quality of the shovel makes up for that. It is great for digging toileting holes while roughing it deep in the woods. It is compact and lightweight so you can throw it in with all your other gear and hardly notice it. Given the option of having a shovel or not in your gear bag, you will not hesitate to carry this one with you because of it's compact nature. If you are a minimalist you may think this shovel is a bit too heavy but, I would consider myself to be somewhere in the middle of the gear carrying category. Quality material and good workmanship. You will be able to dig holes and pound stakes with this. Keep in mind though that it is small, not a full size portable shovel, but not small enough to make itself useless. Took off a star because of the dull edge (that I also sharpened with a grinder) and the lack of ways to secure it to a pack. The bag that comes with it is decent enough, but you have to put the bag and shovel in another pouch to actually secure it. I wouldn't want this thing hanging off my backpack or belt by the string tie. Having said that, it's probably worth the less than $20 you're going to spend for it.Customer Review: Please Read Carefully!!!

well first let me say...this is not the folding shovel i purchased...it was the Gerber 30-000075 Folding Serrated Shovel...and that shovel is such an amazing shovel i used it under my house to dig out a sewer pipe that had to be replaced and it was nice to have that folding shovel handy....it made it easy to crawl with and then use because of it being small!!!!but not too small....and it will be going inside my hiking/camping backpack!!!! never know when you need to dig your way out of situation or....dig your way into shelter!!!!...seriously this thing is tuff!!!

Pros:
- Tiny tiny tiny! It would look proportional only next to a toddler. They give you a small nylon bag that this shovel fits in when fully folded in.
- Looks sturdy. I have not used it - got it for the car, for when I get stuck and need to dig dirt or snow.
- Inexpensive but very cool toy :)
Cons:
- Handle way too short. Digging would not be very efficient.
- Probably too flimsy for anything serious. Do not attempt digging solid dry dirt. I bet snow is the best use of this.

First of all this shovel is much smaller than I thought when I ordered it - it is definitely a mini. It is still much bigger and heavier than I prefer for backpacking but for regular camping trips and keeping in your vehicle for emergencies it is perfect. It folds down to almost the size of the spade since the handle extends and the hammer feature works great. And it is tough and solid like all Gerber products. I've used the cheap no-name folding shovels and they don't hold a candle to this little one. I will probably get one for each vehicle.
