Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-41578 Gorge Folding ShovelCustomer Review: Small and sturdy Summary: 4 Stars
The size was a bit smaller than I expected (I should have looked more closely at the specs). It's approximately 16 inch fully opened and the blade has about 7 inch x 5 inch It's a well built little shovel, feels sturdy even at the 90 degree setting chopping into frozen dirt. Toss in the trunk, good for space-saving, car camping etc. but I doubt it would meet the weight-versus-usefulness standards of backpackers at 1.7 lbs.
Customer Review: Unusually poor quality for Gerber. Summary: 1 Stars
The first time I put this brand new shovel to work it was broken before I finished putting up my tent. Yes, digging out a couple small, rough rocks and pounding in tent stakes was too much for it to handle. Somewhere in its normal use, the main nut jumped its threads and got bound up. When I got back from my weekend trip I put some tools and leverage to the nut, but could not free it up. It is now a shovel that will not fold.
Customer Review: Better than nothing but too small to be tremendously useful Summary: 3 Stars
It did the job fine. Heat wasn't an issue as I was able to shovel hot coals around with it. What kept my review from being more favorable is the relative flimsyness of the handle (specifically the mechanism that allows it to extend). Another concern is that it is too short to have any real leverage. Like I said in the title, it's better than nothing, it's cheap and it's very compact so it may be worthwhile for you.
Customer Review: good E tool Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this shovel about two weeks ago. so far it has not dissapointed me, their is nothing cheap about the construction. as it works well in both the straight and 90 degree angled position. i could easly depend on this tool to do the job. yes it is a little smaller than a standard issue E tool but still performs well. i will probably buy another to have in my personal vehicle. a good value for the money,,,period
Customer Review: Not Beach Friendly Summary: 3 Stars
First, well built, heavy duty tool. The handle is a bit of a pain to slide in and out, but after a day of digging on the beach, I was suitably impressed...until the next morning. The primary hinge pin was already rusting after only a single day.
Yes, it had been exposed to salt water, but was thoroughly rinsed with fresh water at the end of the day and I guess I just expected better from Gerber.
