Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-41770 Artifact Pocket Keychain ToolCustomer Review: Dangerous at first, very handy when you get used to it Summary: 3 Stars
When I bought this tool online impulsively and then read the reviews, I slapped my head and thought, "Oh,no!" The reviews make it sound dangerous at best, lethal at worst. But I had already bought the thing, and instead of returning it immediately, I decided to try to live with it.
First observation: whoever thanked Gerber for designing a knife that seems to want to cut you- it's true. But not due to the x-acto-like foldaway knife, which is what I was expecting. it's the freaking mini-phillips head jutting out of it that's the main hazard. And it doesn't have to be in your pocket: one day I was exiting a starbucks with coffee in one hand and keys in the other. I used the hand with keys to push open the door and felt a sharp pain. I oozed blood as if I were just fighting someone armed with an awl. It hurt for a couple of days, so it made a fairly deep hole in the palm of my hand. But I have found over time it's an indispensible part of the tool, great for replacing batteries in electronics (even some laptops), fixing instuments, even starting holes for screws. Plus, after riding around in my pocket for a couple of months, the really sharp edges are softening, so it's not as dangerous as it once was. Gerber, this is a great feature, but implemented poorly- it really ought to fold away for storage purposes.
The craft blade is the main part that worries people, and the reviews here bear graphic witness to why you should be worried. These things can be very dangerous. ask anyone who's been cut with one, it's not fun and the results can be long lasting. after a couple of months, mine still seems to want to stay in place and not flick out randomly, which has been my fear. you can't exactly see what's holding it there, but mine clicks reassuringly in the closed position, so it doesn't keep me up at night. Also, I have since adopted the habit of using a coin to open it (great idea, thanks!), so my experience with this feature has thus far been pain-free.
the double-headed crowbar thingy has turned out to be a very helpful feature. I removed nails and moulding with it; split pieces of wood for a project; removed insanely secure packaging from toys and gear; the most awesome, though, has to be that it's perfect for cracking pistachios. You need just enough wedge at just a certain size to get in the edge and work it out, and this tool fits like a glove. Happy coincidence, I'm sure, but happy nonetheless.
I have yet to use the thing that looks like a can opener, and I'm not sure if I will anytime soon, since another part of it can bore holes easily (you know which part I mean). But I'm sure I'll find a use for it eventually.
