Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 30-000176 Serrated Edge Epic KnifeCustomer Review: I wish I had more use for a bottle opener. Summary: 3 Stars
I like to lash a knife to my left shoulder strap for quick easy access on the trail, I've been using the Black Gerber LMF II in this orientation but it always feels a little extreme for day hikes. The Epic looked like a decent compromise with holes in the handle allowing for use as a spear tip if the need were to arise, and a short thick blade that could survive a little baton abuse. Both of these were well founded assumptions, my two major complaints are;
1) Too much of the handle is dedicated to the bottle opener, I have relatively small hands for a grown man, but my pinkie still doesn't have anywhere to hang out besides the bottle opener, (where there is no grasping area or protection from edges) if I got stuck in the woods with this as my primary tool I would be forced to improvise a grip around the bottle opener to use it effectively for any length of time (If you've lost your pinkie in a tragic accident BUY THIS KNIFE! Gerber made it just for you)
2) The minimalist sheath has little to no ability to be lashed to anything, it's clip or nothing, thankfully the clip is screwed to the sheath so I will be able to make a small metal plate with lash holes to screw on in place of the pocket clip so my para-cord has something firm to go through before it's tied to my pack strap.
On the flip side, there are no compromises in the bottle opening design, I highly recommended this for frat-boys with sixers in their packs, or any back-country bartenders.
Summery:
Cons; Limited sheath mounting, sheath will wear quickly on blade side, Limited knife/handle functionality.
Pros; Short stout blade should survive batoning, holes in handle for spear mounting, most manly bottle opener ever, Gerber likes people without pinkies.
For the price I wouldn't say I regret the purchase, it's a cool looking bottle opener and the knife might be useful, if I still don't like it after I've modified the mount and taken it on a couple hikes I can always put the clip back on it and give it to a friend who drinks more than I do and they will love it.

| Partially Serrated Fixed Blade for Versatility Whether you're backpacking, packing a survival kit to keep in your car, or filling your work truck with everyday essentials, the Gerber Epic Knife delivers. Featuring a 3.45-inch partially serrated blade, this knife makes quick work of sawing through nylon rope and other tricky materials. And because part of the blade is not serrated, it also delivers clean, accurate slices and can be easily sharpened using traditional methods. Furthermore, the knife's blunt tip lends it an unusual look and additional strength.Compact, Easy-to-Grip Design for Excellent Control Good handling means the difference between a safe, effective tool and a second-class knife, and the Epic ensures that you get a good grip for maximum comfort and control. Its handle is textured and shaped to prevent slippage, and is crafted from glass-filled nylon, which is both strong and lightweight. The knife measures 7.40 inches overall and weighs in at a very modest 5.12 ounces for easy manipulation and transport. Big thumb grooves on the back of the blade make it easy to apply extra pressure on the blade when dealing with the toughest applications, while a pair of through-and-through holes in the handle allow you to lash the knife to a stick or staff for use as a fishing spear or as another long-handled tool. The Epic's handle also features an integrated bottle opener. Locking Sheath and Pocket Clip for Carry Options Included with the Epic is a durable, hard sheath that delivers a wide range of carry options. Since the knife locks into sheath, you can choose to carry the knife in either a tip up or a tip down position. This makes it easier to place the knife in your gear so that you can access it quickly and intuitively. The sheath also features a reversible pocket clip, which ensures that both right-handed users and left-handed users can orient the knife for convenient carrying.
