Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gladiator GarageWorks GACUXXCAVK Claw Advanced Bike Storage, v1.0, Aluminum

Customer Review: Perfect for our Trail A Bike, very secure!
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
It took a bit of time to get this installed, not because it was all that difficult but because I had to wait for my hubby to borrow a ladder and find the ceiling studs in our garage. Once we were ready to install it we ran into the issues others here have mentioned with the awkward positioning of the screw holes and angle needed to get them in... but with minimum cursing it was up.

It looks really neat, is that worth the price tag... probably not but for us this was a far better option then a hardware store hook. We have an Adams Trail A Bike Adams Original Alloy 1 Trail-a-bike 2007 Whitefor our daughter and it only has one tire, this is the perfect hook for it and it's easy enough for me to get it up and down myself without trying to lean and unhook it from one of those cheap hooks. Not to mention our garage is jammed, with this hook I feel secure if someone was to bump into it from the side the bike wouldn't fall down.

For our two bikes I'm happy with our standing/stakable bike rack but wouldn't hesitate recommending this hook!

Gladiator Garageworks Claw Advanced Bike Storage v1.0 is really wordy title for ceiling mounted bicycle hanger. It's advanced because it locks the bicycle using a clamp that require user-interactivity. You have to push the bicycle upward and bump the button in order to release it and same motion is required for clamping it. It's safe because of it. If you are looking for safety and storage solution for bicycle in your garage or backyard this product has both. Just watch out for weight limits. The bicycle hanger is screwed on the ceiling with two screws. Use four screws by purchasing additional two screws from hardware store and use sets of washers in order to make sure the unit is firmly connected to the ceiling through the plaster ceiling and on to the two by four or wood beam. Make sure you don't try to attach more than one bicycle or use two units together as a pull up bar with a bar going across the two clamps. It's for about 20 lbs or less bicycle for each hanger. Always, let your children know not to hang or pull on the bicycle when it's put away.

Customer Review: Good Idea, Installation Problems Though

On the surface this is a no brainer, there are 4 screw holes so depending on which way you want to mount it you put the screws through one or the other set. However the way that I needed to mount it so that my bike would be parallel to wall to save space forced me to use the holes that are in line with the claws, so I didn't have a way to get a regular screw driver in there. If you use the holes opposite of the claws I'm sure it would be way easier, but if you do have to use those holes this could be a pain, I ended up using a pair of locking vice grips and a Phillips head bit...so it is possible just not very easy.

As far as build quality and ease of use, they are both great, if your bike is heavy it could be a bit of a problem though because my bike is only about 20lbs and it was not all that easy to lift it up and line it up to the plunger. I do like how it saves space and it is easier the traditional bike hooks...if my installation would have gone a little smoother I would have given it 4 stars...I'm sure I'll get over it someday :)

Customer Review: Why didn't I think of that?

It took more time to locate a beam than it did to install the Claw. My drill is a little chunky and I'm a little clumsy, so I pre-drilled the holes, rather than attempt to balance on a ladder, while holding the claw and drill with extension. Instead of a regular screwdriver, I used a ratchet with a bit attachment, (No bruised knuckles!)

So, that's how it went up... But does it work? Heck yeah! The "double' hook holds my bike securely so that it does not slip off. My bike is lightweight, so I have no concerns about the Claw failing. It is relatively easy to operate. The button, which opens and closes the hooks, is large and easy to press with the front tire.

It is a little pricey, considering there are far less expensive alternatives available. However, if you like to have to added protection of having the hooks encircle the bike rim from both sides, this is a nice option. Let's face it, $60, is worth not finding your bike lying on the floor of the garage, or worse on the hood of the car.

Customer Review: Does the job and looks cool,
Summary: 4 Stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Claw is a sturdy, functional bike hanger. It mounts with two enclosed screws to a beam or rafter. I chose to add two additional wood screws to further strengthen its grip on my basement ceiling beam.

Hanging my wife's bike -- a Giant OCR Alliance W -- is simply easy. Just lift the bike, push the large button/switch with the tire and the claw closes up around the rim. Now the bike isn't going anywhere. To get it out, just push the button again to open the claw. The contact points with the bike wheel won't scratch the rim. One of the nicest things about the Claw is your bike will not be accidentally knocked out of it -- something that could happen with a regular hook.

The only question is whether one needs that additional security. An inexpensive hook will hang a bike just a well as the claw. However, a hook doesn't look as cool and won't prevent the bike from being jostled to the point of falling. It's a matter of how much one is willing to pay for that extra piece of mind.
