I installed four of these shelves high up on one of my Gearwall walls. The quality of the product itself is excellent - very sturdy, visually appealing, and easy to assemble. And under perfect conditions, installation would be a snap. When I say perfect conditions, I mean a wall that does not bow out or in. Framers probably take the least care when framing a garage because, after all, no one cares if the walls are perfectly flat, right? That is, unless you want to install a GearLoft shelf on your GearWall. The problem with the design of this shelf is that there is a continuous 3ft track behind the shelf that is meant to slide down over the Gearwall extrusion to hold it in place. If your wall has any bows in or out where you want to install the shelf, you might be out of luck. I had some minor bowing along the wall where I wanted to install four of these in a row. I literally had to take a large wooden block and hammer the shelf into the track with two of the four shelves, and for one shelf, I had to partially unscrew all of the GearWall screws where the wall bowed in so that I could get the shelf to lock into the track. Once in place, I re-tightened the screws. Only one 4-foot section of the wall met the stringent tolerance imposed by the design of this shelf. So, not an easy install by any stretch of the imagination. I had a very good custom builder build my house, so I can only imagine what the garage walls in a tract home would look like.
My recommendation before ordering these shelves is to use a 4-foot level and check how flat your wall is in the area where you want to install the shelves. If you have more than an 1/8" of bowing in or out, I'd say you're in for a real fight. If your wall is flat, then go for it!
