Tools and Hardware Reviews of Globe 6880201 13-Watt Mini Compact Fluorescent Spiral Light Bulb (60-Watt Incandescent Equivalent), Soft White, 8 Pack

Customer Review: I bought these for one purpose.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have tread lights on my stairs in my house. They are needed to light up the very dark staircases, so they are on from dusk until bedtime (or longer if the kids leave them on). Each tread light receptacle requires two (not to exceed) 25watt bulbs and to access them to change them requires unscrewing the covers off of the fixtures.

I bought these bulbs for the following reasons: a) one of them will replace both of the incandescent bulbs and b) they last longer, so the hassle of changing them will be less and c) the light output, which by the way, is pretty close to a typical soft white incandescent bulb, is good enough for the tread lights and d) I get an effective 10 more watts of light output for 37 watts less consumption (so there is more light on the stairs for safety reasons and I feel greener).

I have not used them in lamps, etc so I cannot comment on their effectiveness in those applications, but for what I bought them for, they work well.

They are roughly the same size as a typical 25watt bulb.

Customer Review: Great Product!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just received my 8-pack of the soft white bulbs, and I'm so thrilled with them! I started changing to compact fluorescent bulbs and my electric bill did start going down! It's easier to see the savings now that I'm no longer running the air-conditioner. I was gradually introducing them into my home, and my October bill was about 25%-30% lower than last year at that time. I've been trying different brands, hoping to achieve lighting that more closely resembled incandescent bulbs. I'm not a fan of the cool fluorescent lighting and it seems like every brand has its own take on this. Okay, these bulbs are PERFECT for me. They look soft and warm, they are sized in a way that is more compatible with my lamps and fixtures. They even light up quickly (some fluorescent bulbs take a couple of minutes to brighten completely). Anyway, these are exactly what I was looking for and I'm going to get another set of 8 so I can upgrade even more of my home! Also, this is a GREAT price.

Customer Review: Too many failures. Don't expect rated life expectancy
Summary: 3 Stars

I have replaced 9 bulbs in my house with these GE compact bulbs during the last year. I have had three failures so far. I would estimate these bulbs failed in less than 500 hours which makes them rather expensive considering the price. The bulbs which failed were all mounted in ceiling fixtures base up. Possibly that was a contributing factor. The three that failed were all from the same package. Possibly that was a bad production run. One of the bulbs was installed above a staircase in a fixture that is difficult to access. I put the bulb there specifically to not have to change it again based on the advertised life expectancy of these bulbs. It failed in a few months in an area where an incandescent lasted a couple of years. I do like the concept of saving energy and will continue to use the seven left in the package I already purchased, but I won't buy more GE bulbs if the failure rate continues.

Customer Review: You will be happier with the ULTRA mini
Summary: 1 Stars

You will be happier with the ULTRA mini. Trust me. Most lamps that use 60 watts incandescent bulbs are smaller and/or have less shade space. And the "minis" ain't all that mini - I have had to use the ultra-minis on lamps that used to use 3-ways. And the soft white ultra minis I have bought are brighter than the incandescent equivalent (closer to 75 watt).

I "know" from compact fluorescents as we 95% converted 6 months ago (only one incandescent left). You'll get used to them in a very short time.

Ultra minis were selling on Amazon for a LOT less than this (price is total rip-off).

Customer Review: Great Value Brand seem better
Summary: 3 Stars

These lights are not that bad. They do help with the energy bill, and the light that comes from them is very appealing.

The thing you need to know before buying these kinds of light bulbs is that they almost always take awhile to get to their full brightness, and sometimes don't turn on immediately. I do have GE, Great Value, and sylvania brands throughout my house, and from my observations the Walmart Great Value Brand which cost about 40% less get brighter faster than the GE or Sylvania brands. I have not had any of them die on me yet, so I can't tell you which ones last the longest.
