Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gorilla Rack Steel-Framed Shelving Unit - 5 Shelf, 48in.W x 18in.D x 72in.H, Model# GRZ6-4818-5DICustomer Review: Quality Issues - Can Be Very Hard to Assemble Summary: 3 Stars
First let me say I'm a degreed and licensed Mechanical Engineer with 33 years of experience. A guy who does most of his own household, auto and motorcycle maintenance and repairs. In other words, I'm not clueless or inept.
Also, over the years I've bought and assembled quite a few shelving units, including one other Gorilla brand unit. I have something to base my opinions on.
That said, the Gorilla shelving unit I bought and assembled the other day was terribly hard to put together. Most of the joints were so tight I think the Average Joe Consumer would have been unable to do it. As it was I had to experiment to find a way to get the joints to go together without destroying the shelf rails.
These racks are designed with tight-fitting joints that you pound together with a soft-face or dead-blow hammer. Once the joints are together, the load you put on the shelves makes the assembly even tighter. But getting the joints together in the first place can take some pounding. And if the unit is defective, far too much pounding. So much pounding, in fact, that you can end up severely damaging the shelf rails before you can get the joints together.
Even though I put a wooden block up against the rails to protect them, pounding on the block instead of directly on the rails, I was bending the Z-rails without getting the joints together. I thought seriously about returning the unit, and frankly, I should have. The joints should not have been that tight. But I didn't want to go to the trouble of returning it, if only because the package was so darned heavy! So I tried to find a way to assemble the unit without damaging anything else.
What I ended up doing was laying a 3/4" x 2" x 10" bar of solid aluminum against the part of the Z-rail that supports the shelf and banging away on that with a 1-pound ball-peen hammer. I ended up doing heavy damage to the aluminum bar, but I finally managed to get the joints together. It took far more pounding than it ever should have, believe me.
The good news is that rack is together solidly. Nothing short of a nuclear blast is going to knock it apart. It is a really fine unit, now that it is together, and I don't regret my purchase.
But if you are Average Joe Consumer you should think twice about buying one. You may be getting in over your head.
And if you work for Gorilla, you may want to pass the word that there are quality issues that need to be addressed.
