Customer Review: Japanese chisels

I have quite a few Japanese chisels and thought this set would be a nice addition to the flock. There is good news and bad news on the hoops. Most Japanese chisels require hoop setting by the user. Good news is that these hoops are already set. Bad news is that you cannot do it yourself without alot of trouble. The hoops are a little high for my taste--I like about 1/8" of wood exposed to absorb the hammer blow. These are set almost flush. After removing and setting one, I decided to leave well enough alone. Not a big problem, but I like setting my own hoops.
As for the chisels, they take big chunks and do it quickly. I hammered for quite some time without any edge failures. These chisels are also easy to hone.
I would rate this set of Japanese chisels as an outstanding value. The fit and finish is nice and the edges hold up well. A real bargain at about ten bucks each.
