Tools and Hardware Reviews of 9½" Japanese Double Edge Pull SawCustomer Review: Best Low-priced Ryoba Summary: 5 Stars
I own a couple of these saws. I've also owned another
inexpensive brand (Sharksaw) with the hollow plastic
handles.
The problem with a plastic handle Ryoba is the handle
may be too light to have a balanced tool. In order to
balance the light plastic handle, the maker of the plastic
handle saw uses a lighter blade (more on that later).
The Gyocochu saws have a rattan handle - the traditional
type - and a replaceable blade. Unless you have some sort
of wrist injury that makes you prefer a pistol-grip
type saw, my opinion is the ergonomics and control of
the traditional Japan handled pullsaw cannot be improved
on for a Ryoba.
Pistol-grip saws are okay too but I prefer the ones
made by Zeta saw, which have a tough rubberized handle
and a replaceable blade. The Zeta saws are not available
in stores as far as I know - you have to order them -
and the Zeta line does not include a double edged Ryoba.
The blade lasts a long time as long as you don't cut plywood
with it. The hard glues in engineered wood boards like
plywood and MDF will dull the teeth on these nice saws, so
be disciplined and use them for solid woods only and you'll
get long life from the blade.
While technically you could resharpen the blade to a Japanese
saw, it's impractical because you need special and costly
files to do it, not to mention skill.
The reason I like this brand of saw is the ryoba is made of
thicker metal than some others so there is less flex to the
blade. I suppose you could get used to working with a saw
with a more flexible blade and even prefer it, but having
tried the stiffer bladed-saws like this one, I prefer a
stiffer pull-saw in general.
The saw is a good value. I think you'll find it's a nicer
tool than the ones with the plastic handles if ordering
by mail. If you get a chance to look at saws at a woodworking
shop or show, check out the blade flexibility.
I also own a couple of dozukis by this brand and they are
great performing saws. I've had them a long time and used
them lots (but never on plywood) and they still are pretty
sharp.
Description of 9½" Japanese Double Edge Pull SawA unique feature of the Gyokucho Ryoba Saws is the handle which can be tilted in relation to the blade. This allows access into areas otherwise awkward or impossible to reach. Carpenters, restoration workers and boat builders will find this feature particularly useful. The teeth are impulse hardened for extended wear. The handles are wrapped with rattan for a secure grip. The various blades can be interchanged. A brochure detailing use is included with each saw.
