You know, I've got about ten magnifiers to read with...none of them work! Every last one is either a fresnel lens (they arent designed to magnify things for clarity)...or glass that was never intended to be used to read with. (like this one.)
However, I have noticed that if you take two of these and hold one at arms length, and the other against your face...they make for a fine (cheaply made) telescope.
But as a reading device--one star.
However, I did notice if you have a wallmap, you can put this magnifier at arms length (close to the map on the wall) and see it magnify 'some'.
I guess if you found a way to hold your book four feet away, hold the magnifying glass close to it--that might work. But I doubt I'll ever use this for reading a book.

The glass is very clear. But the magnification is about X2 at best, a far cry from X5, as advertised. The diameter is 110mm, which sort of compensates for the lack of proper magnification. With a 100-110mm diameter, I think, a X3 magnification is more realistic. I have ordered a X3 proper lens now.Customer Review: Useful reasonably priced tool

The piece was purchased to aid me in classifying and observing my stamp collection and I am sure it would also work well with coins and other hobbies that could use a bit of visual amplification. I ordered this magnifying glass for my mother for Christmas and I'm very happy with it. It has a nice weight and is a great size for looking at documents (which is what she wanted it for). Product does well on primary function; magnification.
In hindsight, I wish I had paid more attention to the handle type. The handle is quite thin and round making it a bit difficult to hold. I would recommend a more substantial handle on the next version.
