Tools and Hardware Reviews of HM Digital Pocket Size TDS Meter TDS-4 Water Quality Tester

Customer Review: Simple, quick, easy to use.
Summary: 4 Stars

I found this meter to be useful for testing both my home water quality, both before and after the water softener and RO system, and my salt water pool.

It is quick and easy to use. The reading it gave me for my salt water pool matched what the pool equipment also indicated. It also gave me confidence my RO system was working well.

I visited a local manufacturer of water softener systems and had this with me. I learned it is one of the same units they use in their line of work.

But heed the warning in the instructions -- do not get it wet. That sounds funny since it is for testing water, but you should only insert the measurement end in water. Letting the entire unit slip into the water would get the electronics inside wet.

Customer Review: Why this is better than other meters that look the same
Summary: 5 Stars

If your aim is to check on the performance of your home water filtering system when fed by a municipal water supply you don't need anything more. Using it to determine whether a clear mountain stream is safe to drink or if your water well has been contaminated by the waste storage facility down the road is quite a different matter.

There is a cheaper TDS-EZ version which looks the same but does not have a thermometer nor does it offer temperature compensation (doh). Plus this one has a case. Big whoop, I know. HM Digital has a selection guide to hand held testers at [...] with all the details. What else is there to say? It is accurate, it lasts and it's cheap. You don't often get that combination anymore.

Customer Review: Seems accurate, good info
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this on a few sources since buying it a few weeks ago.

Suburban Philly tapwater: 230 ppm
Same water but filtered by the fridge: 200 ppm
Dasani: 30 ppm
Grand Cayman tapwater: 175 ppm
Le Bleu delivered water: 0 ppm

Needless to say I was shocked by the Le Bleu but it really re-enforced the value of paying for purified water. I know the Dasani might actually have some good things in it (magnesium, potassium, etc) but I would definitely recommend getting a tester like this and finding a way to get water (delivered, RO filter, etc) which is pure. It's a small price to pay to independently verify the purity of the water you're drinking.

Customer Review: Compact TDS Meter
Summary: 4 Stars

I've only used this meter a few times now as I just received it today so don't look for any reliability data. If this meter stops working prematurely, I'll revisit this review. According to the specifications, this meter has about a 2% accuracy which is more than good enough for a general purpose TDS meter. I use it to measure water quality from the tap and in my hydroponic tank. With this meter, I just discovered today that I needed to change the water in my tank as my plants weren't looking really healthy. As far as I'm concerned, this meter has already paid for itself. Lastly, it's light in weight and small enough that the owner can probably attach it to a shirt pocket.

Customer Review: Using for hydroponics with no problem
Summary: 4 Stars

I was going to buy a pricey EC meter, buy my hydroponics dealer said this one would be just as good.
The only drawback is that it only has 3 digits, so anything higher than 999 ppm requires you to multiply by 10. (A tiny "x10" indicator flashes when that's the case.)

I use it with my Aerogarden to grow lettuce, herbs and tomatoes. The only other drawbacks are
1. It's not totally submersible, so I'm afraid of dropping it into my Aerogarden.
2. It's not all that easy to read. But it does have a "hold" button, so you can read it after pulling it out of the water.

For the price, I'm very happy I got it.
