This HQRP controller allowed me to combine devices that were never supposed to be part of any solar package.
They are:
5 Watt solar panel from Harbor Freight (trickle charger)
Car battery (new, but unused)
Generic 400 Watt Inverter
They are all playing together nicely with the HQRP charge controller. The car battery, tho new, had been sitting out of a car for nearly a year. I connected everything together, and left it alone for a week. The controller had risen the battery's voltage from 10.5 to 12.8V (a half-volt higher than what the panel alone had achieved). My 5 watt panel barely pushes enough milliamps to overcome the battery's internal resistance, so the controller is definitely doing its job.
The LED Indicators follow the Legend which is silkscreened on the cover. The "Load" out terminals do turn ON and OFF with a push of the button, also indicated by a red LED,( You can see at a glance if the Load terminals are enabled). I haven't yet tested to see whether it shuts off at Low Voltage Disconnect, that is on my next visit. The screw terminals are solid. I like the fact that one can use a 10 gauge wire-I did.
Overall, I am happy with the way the HQRP controller allows a more flexible power pack in my remote shed. Now I am budgeting to upgrade the rest of the parts to make a really useful power station. Take care.
